Subject: Synthetic Rear End Lube
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2001 R/T. I know that stock that it doesn't have synthetic fluid in the rear end. I would like to put some in but Dodge uses rtv as the sealent...not a gasket. I am afraid to put that in and use rtv because i know that synthetic would attack the rtv and maybe cause a leak. If anyone has any ideas or knows where to get a gasket...please let me know.

I used 75w90 mobil 1 and rtv to seal it. I have 4000 miles on it since the oil change, and no leaks so far.

Go to your local dealer and get a tube of the RTV-ATF sealer. Basically I think close to the Right Stuff. Most RTV's in auto parts don't work as good as the RTV version the dealer uses.

I wouldn't use anything but the Series 2000 Racing
gear lubes available from AMSOIL.

I installed the AMSOIL Series 2000 75w-90 Racing
Gear Lube and a Fel-Pro gasket on my DAK instead
of using silly-cone.

P.S. Auto Zone stocks the gaskets.

The dealers now stock a red colored RTV that is not broken down by the synthetic lube...

What did you ask for at Auto Zone for the gasket. I went there and they said that nothing was availble. Did you just tell them a Dakota or what. Thanks for the replies everyone!

I've used Red Line 75w90 and sealed with grey RTV and never had a problem with a leak.

should I use synthetic after I install the Sure
Grip Limited Slip? or should I use the regular
stuff, so there is more friction for an easier
break in? Do I need to pick up a tube of that
red RTV junk when I get the limited slip?

Hello Guys, I can tell you that the right stuff is the best sealant I have ever used!!!!! It cures in one minute and is the toughest sealant I have ever used!! I have used RTV since 1989 and have never seen it leak due to synthetics. The only time I have seen it fail is if it is not properly used or poor surface prep. Most Japanese cars have not used oil pan gaskets in years! I have a 9.25 felpro gasket at home. I will try to see what the number is. I think I used one for a fullsize Ram 1973-1987 I think? I still have the box at my Dads place. I will try to get it this weekend.

Auto Zone, Advance Auto and NAPA can get the
gasket for you but for some reason they have a
hard time looking up the numbers in the book.

Advance Auto had to call Fel-Pro's tech line just
to get a number for me, unfortunetly I have thrown
away the old package so I have no idea what the
number was.

I just wanted to close out the search. I took Sandmans advise and asked for a rear end gasket for a 1982 Full size Dodge with a 12 bolt cover. He went and got the gasket and we matched them up. Perfect match. The part number for the fel-pro gasket is RDS 55073. Thanks everyone.

I see you already got the part number. I did not forget about ya. I had to change my U-joints out on my 16 year old Toyota and this week my company is moveing us to another facility so I have not made time to post it. I just went out to my wifes truck and got the info and sae you already had it. Remeber to torque them to spec!!! you do not want to squeze out the gasket!!
