Subject: Water Pump IP: Logged
Message: 318 started leaking some coolant today and its coming from the bottom of the water pump. So i took the old one out and it looks fine. The surface looks prett clean and smooth (minus the old gasket). Anybody know if i need to replace the whole pump or would just replacing the gasket fix my prob? or better yet how do you tell if its the pump and not the gasket???

Message: The gaskets hold up pretty well - its almost always the pump. Could be leaking through the bearings under pressure - you wouldn't be able to see that once its off the motor. Just replace it.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Message: Yup. Replace it now. only other choice is to put it back on and be sure you know where it's leaking from BEFORE you take it off. Once it's off you can't tell. I know that isn't what you want to here but that's the real deal.
So many proplems .... So little time

Message: So when I took it off there is no noticable wear or cracks or anything. I bought a new one and im the process of installing it now.

Message: Well, after my second try i think i got it. No leaks yet. [crossing my fingers & knocking on wood]. Flushed the coolant and should be ready to go.
Water pump - $70
Puddy Knife - $4
Razor/Gasket scraper to do the job that the
puddy knife couldn't do - $7
hi-temp silicone - $5
2nd gasket - $2
Daddio - why replace the bypass hose as well??? Never heard anything like that.

Message: I would change the bypass hose since it connects to the pump and is much easier to change in unison with the pump. The bypass hose is most likely hard and brittle at this point as well since it was probably installed with the now failed pump. Its not impossible to change the bypass hose with the pump on but it is a much easier job to do while changing the pump. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure..........
