Subject: vigerous vibration @ 70 mph IP: Logged
Message: Recently, I noticed vibration around 70 mph. It starts around 68 mph & fades at 75 mph. I have to do 80 mph to get rid of it!!! %^) Anyway, it's bad enough that the change in my tray next to the 4x4 shifter rattles to the point that the radio can't drown out the clanging!
I had recently changed all 4 tires (worn down to the TWI) & alignment. U-joints were replaced a year ago & I overhauled the rear a few years back with all new bearings & PowerTrax no-slip. New hubs in the front like a year ago, too. I'm guessing the u-joints maybe bad again? I did get the greasable ones @ Napa & lube them up every few thousand miles.
I drive a '99 CC 5.2L 4x4 stock aluminum rims - any ideas?

Message: Yeah, I thought so too, until I got new tires. Then the same thing happened. And Aluminum rims aren't easy to bend like the steel ones.
I think when I get the time, I'll rotate the tires with the full size spare & see if I find a bad rim.

Message: It is very possible that one is warped. A good friend of mine had a nice set of alum wheels and one was warped. Wouldn't balance at all or would quickly unbalance itself after a few miles. It would shake the truck liberally at 60mph.
If they are stock, try taking the spare rim and replace each wheel sequentially with that spare to find out which wheel is the one that could be causing a problem. Once you find out which one is giving you problems, you can take it to a wheel shop to either get it fixed (if it is fixable) or get a replacement.

Message: I would think it strange the tire shop wouldn't catch on to a worped wheel unless they had a new kid doing it and this happens. Also not unusual to get a new tire with a slipped belt in it. The speed your indicating does imply tire/wheel problem. It also indicates a CV joint problem.

Message: Yeah, the driver / rear tire has like 3.00 oz of weights on it - might be sign. The vibration was there before I got tires, so it's reasonable to think a bad rim. If that is the case, I'll take it back to Mavis Tire & swap rims with my spare. The spare is the stock good year that has half the tread of the new tires I got. Throwing on the spare wil probably throw a ABS code given the vast difference in tread hieght!

Message: What Obio3 said about the tire guys...
If they paid any attention, they would see if it was warped or something on the tire balancing machine. The tire should be smooth as the machine spins the tire and anything side to side or up and down would easily be visible then.
I'd have it rechecked at the tire shop.

Message: I'd have to admit that some of the people I've seen at these tire shops are not much more intelligent than the people that work at the Jiffy Lube oil places. LOL
Go ahead and get it checked again. If it does turn out to be the rim, you may want to check with the manufacturer for a replacement since it was probably a factory defect.

Message: Tony, definetly sounds like a wheel balance issue. Id recommend having them re-balanced and make sure they do a dynamic balance and not static. Most of the time at tire dealers, the techs are in a hurry and they will only do a static balance, meaning that they only use a weight on the inside edge of the wheel either using a tape-a-weight or tack on lead weight. Dynamic means that they will use a weight on the inner most part of the wheel and as far out as they can go, in your case with an aluminium wheel they will use a tape-a-weight behind the face of the wheel so it wont show. If they cant fix it, you can ask them if they have access to a "Road Force" balancer. This type of balancer actually balances the wheel to he tire, so when they spin it, it tells them were to position the tire on the rim for the best balance.

Message: I have the stock Aluminum rims - they come from the factory with weights hammered on.
Yeah, when I worked in Fire$tone years ago, the tires were stamped with a circle to help us mount the tire on a rim - match it up to the valve stem unless otherwise noted.
When I find the time, I'll swap it out with the spare, since the spare is the same rime & tire size.

Message: This tipe of vibration was in part responsible for the replacement of my NV3500 gear box.
In another ocasion, i almost bought an aluminum shaft after installing some Pirelli Scorpions P zero. They wouldn`t accept balancing even after puting weight on more than one quadrant of the wheel.
when i took the tires out, the problem was fixed.
