Subject: hot exhaust IP: Logged
Message: i recently got Flowmaster 40 series with dual out on my 4.7 dak. since i gotten the exahaust ive noticed a smell of melting plastic and the exahaust seems to run hot now, the bed is warmer than usuall and the muffler it self isnt that gray color but is turning a golden hue, the only other thing i have done to the engine is put a "cold" air intake on it. Any suggestions will be appreciated

Message: Do the obvious thing first. Get under the truck, and follow the exhaust piping from the muffler on back to the tailpipes. See if the pipes get close to any plastic or rubber parts, or any undercoating.
The bed is warmer than usual? Where? If it's the whole bed, probably Summer coming has something to do with it. If it's a particular spot, what's directly under the bed at that spot?

Message: Is the muffler stainless steel ? That could turn a golden color. Like DanK, I'd look to see if the exhaust is touching something first. Running lean will also put more heat to the exhaust.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Message: When mine was installed, I was told the exhaust would be much hotter. Even 6 to 8 inches away, my bed is heated by the exhaust.

Message: yeah the exhaust is stainless, and i did look along the exahust its not touching anything plastic, the only thing i could think of was the hangers they used have rubber on them, but they dont look like they are melting at all, i dont think my truck is running lean although i will look into it.

Message: When you get a new exhaust it will smell for about one hundred miles becasue of the coating that is on the inside of the muffler and it does smell a little like burning plastic at first but that will go away. The "hue" is a more common color on chrome if the muffler is anodized steel it will get that golden "hue" just like chrome headers get the blue around the bends.
