Subject: 4.7L Help IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2000 Dak 4.7L Auto 2x4 and lately the idle has become a bit erratic. Warm or cold, it seems to fluctuate between 200-100rpm at an idle. My engine light came on about 3 days ago and when I took it in I was told the following;
Something about a small evap leak detected, evap pressure test and motorvac service required. they also said I have a charcoal canister and the lines are plugged?? Is this common and moreso is this something I can repair myself? They want $269 to do this???
thanks

Message: depending how many miles you have it may be covered under the federal emissions warranty. i think the warranty is 8yr/100k or somehitng along those lines.
it could just be a bad gas cap. but that would not affect your idle. your IAC is probably dirty. try cleanig the throttle body.

Message: Dave,
maybe try using Seafoam to clean your intake and throttle body. I recently used a can in my gas tank and intake, notice my engine running better. Just follow directions on the can.

Message: You are one lucky dude to have a 4.7L with an idle speed of 100-200 rpms. Mine stays above 600.

Message: 600 would be about correct. Which is considered nice and low in reality. 500 to 600 is normal.

Message: I have had 2 4.7L motors. One in my Dakota and one in a Grand Cherokee. Both had a fluctuating idle around 80,000 miles. I changed the throttle position sensor, cost about $50.00 and this fixed the problem. Easy to install. I bought them at Advanced Auto Parts.
Good Luck

Message: With the erratic throttle would it also cause the trans to jump down to a lower gear and back?

Message: A bad TPS could cause that too - but not all things that could cause an eratic idle would cause that though.
