Subject: 99 5.2L Tranny problem

Message:
I've got problems on the used 99 dak I bought.
It's got a 5.2L with automatic. After I drive about 20 minutes, the transmission seems to slip.
It's fine on the highway for long drives, but it slips in 1st & 2nd & 3rd when I slow down for traffic, then it seems to 'engage' and is OK for a while. Once I get up into 3rd or 4th (OD) it's fine.
Could this just mean the bands need to be adjusted? Is this something a decent shade tree mechanic can handle?

The slipping is not real bad, the truck moves just fine, it's just loud. Then it engages and goes away.

I also put this in the general forum (didn't know what was best, sorry for double posting.)

A standard tranny tune-up is a good place to start. Fluid/filter/adjust the bands. Remember, one band can be adjusted outside the case, but the other is internal, and you have to drop the pan to do it.

Remember, if you do it yourself, more is not necessarily better. Better looser than too tight.
Think about using Amsoil ATF.
I think it works. Got me 500,000 miles.

Are you sure your not hearing your fan cluch inguaging and disinguaging. there is always slipage in all automatic tranys untill the OD inguages. Could even be a defective fan cluch inguaging improperly.

So many problems .... So little time
