Subject: 99 5.2L Tranny problem IP: Logged
Message: I've got problems on the used 99 dak I bought.
It's got a 5.2L with automatic. After I drive about 20 minutes, the transmission seems to slip.
It's fine on the highway for long drives, but it slips in 1st & 2nd & 3rd when I slow down for traffic, then it seems to 'engage' and is OK for a while. Once I get up into 3rd or 4th (OD) it's fine.
Could this just mean the bands need to be adjusted? Is this something a decent shade tree mechanic can handle?
The slipping is not real bad, the truck moves just fine, it's just loud. Then it engages and goes away.
I also put this in the general forum (didn't know what was best, sorry for double posting.)

Message: A standard tranny tune-up is a good place to start. Fluid/filter/adjust the bands. Remember, one band can be adjusted outside the case, but the other is internal, and you have to drop the pan to do it.

Message: Remember, if you do it yourself, more is not necessarily better. Better looser than too tight.
Think about using Amsoil ATF.
I think it works. Got me 500,000 miles.

Message: Are you sure your not hearing your fan cluch inguaging and disinguaging. there is always slipage in all automatic tranys untill the OD inguages. Could even be a defective fan cluch inguaging improperly.
