Subject: Special antifreeze...? IP: Logged
Message: Had my other half take my 98 Dak 5.2 by the shop today for an oil change, and while there they told her the coolant overflow had a hole it in and some antifreeze was needed. Anyway, they said "it took a special kind of antifreeze" and charge here a heft sum *Per Quart*.
I figured this truck, or any truck for that matter took just plain ol antifreeze. Never heard of any truck taking "special" antifreeze.
Is there such a thing..? Thanks.

Message: My dad has a 1996 Chevy Silverado and he hit a deer and they put a universal radiator in it and they told him he had to use a special antifreeze in it (orange stuff). They told him not to use it in any of our other vehicles because it would eat up or corrode something and make it leak. Who knows if it is true, might just be one of the many ways they stick you.

Message: Chryslers requires special anti-freeze for 98+.
Fords and GM are 96+
Each use a special blend, but they ARENT expensive. In truth, you can put regular anti-freeze in ANY car so long as you flush the radiator extremely well. The only problem is mixing anti-freezes, but so long as you flush its not really an issue.
Prestone makes an anti-freeze which according to
them and some mechanics can mix with anything you got without problems, no matter what make model or year.
But when it comes to your wife, she got ripped off, and it happens to a lot of people when they don't have a clue.

That's exactly why we must learn as much as we can about our vehicle: how it works, why it works the way it does. Get the Factory Service Manual, or Haynes, or Chilton's, and READ IT.

Message: Anyway you look at it, they gave your wife a paid bill even if she had to ask for one. That much everybody knows about. That bill should have the amount of anti-freeze installed and how much it cost. Next thing is. Have you fixed the leak they found ??? Even if it is a pin hole , If nothing else, there is a wet spot where it's leaking. If there is none, then that's a point in contention you need to ask them to show you. You can bet tnere is no leak.

Message: Just changed mine today. 2006 dakota, 4.7 . I used Zerex G05.It is the same as the factory because they make it for them. They even put the dye in for them. I talked to a tech rep on the phone. The dealer would NOT tell me I could use it. $25.00 a gallon for Mopar.$16.00 a gallon at NAPA for the Zerex G05.
