Subject: 1997 5.2 Rough Start, then runs fine

Hey guys here's my question.

I have a 1997 CC Dakota with the 5.2 in it. Every time I try to
start the truck, it will crank for about five seconds and not start.
However it will usually catch and fire right up on the 2nd try.
After that she runs like a champ with no problems at all. I'm
thinking it might be a coolant sensor, IAC, or something along
those lines.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as long cranks are kinda
embarassing. Thanks again guys!

Bob

Bobby,
I have the same setup you have. Try turning the key on and waiting a few seconds before you try to start the truck. If it fires right away, you have a fuel leak somewhere. Either from a sticky injector, or draining back into the tank. My long start went away because I upgraded injectors.

Also, when is the last time you did a tuneup? A tuneup kit with a cap/rotor, plug wires and plugs will go a long way in the area fast starting, and smooth running.

Our 95 ram does the same thing (it has the 360). It doesn't throw any codes, and everyone tells us that it's the fuel pump. This started happening years ago, and the pump still works (can hear it get pressure as you turn the key). We never thought it was the pump, but we're not sure what's causing it....

same truck, same problem. After years of long cranking starts, the fuel pump finally went. It just wouldn't start anymore. Replaced the fuel pump, been fine ever since.

my '97's got 297k kms on her now, starts better then when it had 100k lol

I have a 97 Dakota Sport CC and it does the same thing except for sometimes it starts to chug after it starts but if I turn it off and start it again it runs fine. I do what Crow said to do, "Turn the key forward and wait a few seconds and then start it" and then it works fine without chugging. I think mine has something to do with the fuel pump though. Im no mechanic by any means but I would hate to go and have something replaced that doesn't need to be. So I would like to hear what you guys have to say about this problem!

If the truck starts and runs, the fuel pump works. However, that does not mean that the pump is good. If it lets pressure leak out, part of it is not functioning correctly.

Also, changing a fuel pump is not a huge deal, and they are not that expensive. Mine died a while back right after I filled the tank, so I decided removing the bed would be easier. Its only a half dozen bolts, a few electrical connections and the gas filler neck. Removal time = 30 min and 4 guys to lift the bed. Work on the tank = 30 min including cleaning. Replacing the bed = 30 min.

If these staring problems annoy you, just make the replacement. Replaceing the fuel pump also changes the filter, which should be done on higher mileage vehicles anyways.
