Looks like the transmission on my 2000 R/T just took a dump. Won't shift out of first, O/D light stays on with switch selected on, and bad noises indicative of mechanical failure along with a burning smell. From reading this board, I get the impression that the 46re transmission is prone to relatively early failure. Nothing like having a big engine hooked up to a crappy tranny. Once I get it fixed, I am seriously considering selling the thing just on the principal of not having to give Dodge another dollar in the future for any other reason. I certainly will never own another Dodge product after my experiences with the Dakota R/T. Junk.

Message: How many miles have you owned the vehical? since new? How often was the fluid/filter changed? What kind of fluid was used? Mine just hit 99,000 miles so far so good. i changed fluid/filter every 12,000 miles with ATF 4 only. When idling i also put it in neutral, even when sitting at a light, i was told it helps to circulate fluid. You suppost to check the fluid in neutral as well.

Message: Hey, don't feel bad. My A500 fried the OD every 15K-20K in the ol' Shelby. Back then, the internet? What was that? No way to learn that this could actually be fixed, just the dealer blaming me for doing something wrong...and I wasn't. Get this, the owner's manual actually stated to use Dextron II, a big no-no...or so they claimed. Turns out, the clutch chatter and other problems are valve body issues. Burnt OD's? That's inadequate cooling and poor lube. That's easily addressed with an external cooler and the increased line pressure from the shift kit. Anyway, these trannies do much better when the better parts are used, as well as an external cooler, and a shift kit. The shift kit will also address the "check while in neutral" issue. You'll be able to check while in park. Fairbanks, TransGo, and Superior all make essentially the same changes to the valve body. These mods can also be made to the "RE" models. One place to see just what is possible is here: http://www.transmissioncenter.net/dodge.htm
Oh, and their trannies mysteriously manage to do fine on fluids other than ATF+4. Go figure.

Message: My 2001 Durango R/T that I bought used had to have the tranny rebuilt at 97,000 miles, 75 miles after I bought it ( Grrrrrr ) Than God for the extended warranty I bought. Cost $1950 at Aamco. Ha, the dodge boys wanted $4600. They wanted $800 just to remove the tranny. Even the warranty company thought that was a rip off. And with the ball joint issues and problems I've had with my babied 99' Dak R/T , I'm beginning to agree that I may not get another Dodge! Hmmm, that Challenger sure looks sweet though...

Did have to replace solenoids.
It is attached to a 3.9 engine. Maybe that is why.

Message: U can suck my balls. U have no clue what the problem was or how they happened. By the way you cant put me or my truck down just by my statement. The truck was a lemon when I bought it and I saved the truck from being totaled then parted out, so dont give me sh*t. This truck Is well maitained and gets the best treatment.

I will second what "that guy" said. Dodge looked at my transmission and guess what? It managed to send debris through the radiator's transmission coolant line and plug it up so badly that it will also requrie a new radiator. The total bill will be probably about $3,300. You Dakota R/T lovers can have your pigs that you are so proud of. It is the only vehicle I have ever owned that suffered such an expensive failure, especially considering the mileage. The reputation Dodge gained for lousy transmissions in the Caravan years ago lives on in the R/T. Now I laugh at the whole "Hemi" craze. What good is a Hemi when it is most likely hooked up to a lousy powertrain as well. Like I said, Junk.

Message: I agree that the transmission in a RT Dakota is a weak point but the rest of the truck is great. I've had all makes and I'll take dodge ahead of them all ..They have gotten over the tranny problems now but even with the weak trannys in the past it was nothing like the bumper to bumper problems I had with my last chev truck ...

Message: Resurecting a dead thread to ask opinions.
Bought a '99RT extended cab with 129,000 miles and
good overall condition. Not show quality, but some
fun stuff done prior to me buying it. Full Gibson
exhaust, K&N intake, accel ign, wheels, lowered.
I want to change the fluid as I get a P0735 code
every few days. Thinking of going to Amsoil or
similar. Truck driven about 100 miles on the
freeway a couple times a week, occasional throttle
tromping, not gonna lie.
What do ya'all think about the Hi-end race type
fluids in the 46RE?
