Subject: timing question 318 IP: Logged
Message: had a rebuilt 318 installed last week- yesterday I noticed the wires from the dist cap didn't look quite right- checked the book and it's all backwards. My buddy told me they've timed it at 180 degrees. Not sure what this means, but should I take it back? It runs fine, but will this present problems in the future? Thanks to any help

Message: The only problem it may present is when doing a tuneup, etc, it may cause some confusion to the one working on it. It's not a problem, nor will it damage the engine. However, I'd make them correct it, or fix myself. Technically, with the dist. shaft at 180-out, it has not been re-assembled properly, and you didn't pay for a 180-out engine. It's simply a matter of popping the dist. cap off, loosening the dist., raising the dist about an inch, turning the dist. shaft by the rotor 180 degrees (it should spin easily), setting the dist back down til you feel it seat in the groove (may have to wiggle the rotor to catch the groove, once engaged, it won't spin), lock it down, pop the cap back on and re-run the wires accordingly.
