I just purchased a 2000 dak qc 5.9L and auto transmission with 47,000 miles and have put about a thousand miles on it.

Started to notice when I back up, then brake but still have a slow roll backward and put the truck in drive, it locks the tranny rotation just like I had slammed on the brakes or hit a rubber retaining wall. Also when taking off in 1st gear the truck seems to be loading almost like I was using 3rd. I also definitly feel the rear bump symptom described on the list after coming to a stop for about 2-3 seconds.

I found the truck to be low on tranny fluid by a quart. After adding, this seemed to help a little with the loading problem but everything else is the same.

I talked to the original owner prior to buying(purchased from dealer) and he said he had the tranny drained and filters changed at 36,000. I did not ask who did the service or what type of fluid they used. I know this guy was from a rinky dink town without an authorized service center. If they put in the wrong atf would this have caused these symptoms? And if he drove 11,000 miles low on fluid? Anyone else seen symptoms like this? Once I'm up to speed the truck runs and sifts smooth. Help!

I love the truck but am I in for a rebuild?

Have a dealer check the tranny and check for PCM flash updates on the shifting. My '01 shifted hard enough to jerk my neck until I had the PCM flash....

Best,

Mine was doing the same thing for three months prior to losing O/D completely. You will be in for a rebuild soon. The bumps you are feeling after two or three seconds is the tranny going back into first.

I have a 2001 Durango, 5.9 liter that had the same symptoms you descibed at approxiamately the same mileage (78000 km.).A trip to the dealer revealed a faulty transmission control computor which once replaced, cured the problem albeit at a cost of approx.$600.00 Cdn. Drivetrain warranty is 100,000km (60000 mi.) Electronics only 36000km (24000 mi.) In addition to the symptoms you describe, the torque convertor in my Durango "hunts" in and out of lockup at highway speeds, sometimes as much as 5-6 times a minute (very annoying). Dealer mechanic test drove($75.00 Cdn. charge) "Could not duplicate customer complaint"

First you should be completly still before changeing gears on an automatic!! At this point I would probably take it to someone that knows DC tranys and have them pull codes and check solinoids in the trans. If they either do not find anything wrong or tell you you need a new trans. I would consider power flushing the trany and refilling with either Amsoil trany fluid,Redline C+ trany fluid or OEM ATF+4. You have nothing to loose at this point. Prior to power flushing I have used Trans-Medic prior to draining and refilling a trans with good results. Varnish build up in a trans is the number one cause of poor performance and repairs. If the fluid is allowed to oxidize it lays down layers of varnish. The varnish prevents parts from moveing through their full range or restrictes flow of fluid to key hydralic circuits. Often if you can remove the varnish the transmission will work properly again. The problem with trans-medic type flushes is that they can just as easliy accelerate wear or cause a big piece of varnish to flake off and plug a circuit. So you always try a flush in a can or a power flush last once someone has told you the trany needs to be rebuilt or replaced and always change the fluid after you are done. Normaly a flush will do it's work in 100-500 miles of driveing.

1999 dakota, 5.2 automatic, 93,000 miles bought it used at 39,000 miles.
i think its a tranny problem..?.here we go, ok (1)i have the 2-3 second delayed "bump" when i stop (2) at initial acc. truck is very sluggish and when i make a turn & accelerate it has died. Starts back up but again sluggishly. (3) when driving 55-65 (65 max i go cuase it feels like the truck is vibrating) then let off gas pedal it seems the truck shakes and as it slows to about 20mph again truck feels like its wobblying.
new parts installed and service within last 3000 miles are
water pump, radiator, throttle body cleaned, abs sensor replaced, tranny service, tune up, shocks, all at the same dealership. I informed them of the problem each time i took it in but nothing. It has gooten real bad and i just need to know if this sounds like a traany problem. i cant'fig it out. please email me at yahoo also if u can. thanks
