Subject: 8.25 or 9.25?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have an 06 dakota quad 4X2 with magnum V8. the rear diff cover has 12 bolts. I assumed it is a 9.25, but on dodge.com, when you build a v8 slt, it says the rearend is a corporate 8.25!!! What gives? Cany anyone clear this up for me, before I order new ring and pinion gears? Thanks, Don.

Go to powertrax.com
They have a nice chart showing the different rear ends.

There is an option tag on your glovebox door. It'll have the code and description for the rear axle size. There is also a label at the end of the right axle tube that specifies what size and gear set you have. 10 bolt covers are 8.25" option code DRA, 12 bolt covers are 9.25" option code DRB.

The axle size is not a configurable option. The normaly installed axle is the 8.25", occasionaly the 9.25" gets put in. There is no particular rhyme or reason - it might be a stocking issue when it was built; "today we have 9.25s on the shelf so that is what we use". (This is an extreme oversimplification.)

I'd say you got lucky on the build lotto, the 9.25" is a stronger axle.

What's your left foot doing?

I believe the 9.25 is standard on the V8's now. Or at least I've not yet come across a V8 '05+ without it, and I've looked under 20 or more.

I have a 2004 Quad cab Dakota 4.7 engine 4X4 with a 9.25 3.55 open differential. I would like to know if any of you Dakota owners out there have had any problems with this differential.

Never had any problems with mine, but when I had the gears changed to 4.10 I was told they have a reputation for the carrier bearings going eventually (around 100,000). I had the carrier bearings freshened up while they were in there. The 8.25 has the same reputation. Seem to hear about a lot more problems with the limited slip assembly, but not so much with the open rears.
