Subject: Who's smelling the smoke?
IP: Logged

Message:
I was driving down the road yesterday around 11:30 at night, and there was barely any traffic on the road. I come up to the stop light and there is a lowered Sonoma, or S-10...couldn't quite make out which one. I like to toy around a little bit when I'm driving and an opportunity like this presents itself. When we took off, he paid absolutely no attention to me, and acted as if it wasn't worth his time. I know this isn't important, but it's bugging me and I want to know if he was afraid, haha...or if he could have smoked me(saying his motor is stock).

When my friend found out I purchased a 93' Dakota, he gave me crap about it...saying he would take me on with his Ranger. He asked me what motor it had, and when I told him it was the V8, he quickly changed his mind. I take some pride in my truck even though it's not modded or anything. It runs super strong and I can hold my own in the world of stock mid-size trucks. I guess the whole point of this post is to get some feedback on how the Dakota fairs alongside it's competitors. If that Sonoma was stock, could I have fed it some smoke? I've rarely ever came across someone willing to make a race out of a routine stop. I've raced a 90 Plymouth Acclaim, and an early 90's Chevy Lumina....but those were hardly gratifying.
(My truck's the 318, ext. cab with Dual Magnaflow exhaust. aggressive tires).

I'm pretty sure it was a small truck, like an S-10 or Sonoma...Wasn't shaped like an suv.

V8 Dakotas will smoke all of the other small/mid-sized trucks stock to stock, I think the closest thing we have to competition as-is is the 4.3L V6 S-10. You can make those other trucks faster with aftermarket parts, but the bang for the buck typically goes to the V8 Dakotas, especially the 5.2L/5.9L V8's.

I agree with the no R.E.S.P.E.C.T for the Dakotas. Is it true that Chevy and Ford don't actually sell a V8 stock in their smaller trucks?

Nobody else makes a V8 in the small/mid-size truck segment, but with the newer Toyota and Nissan V6's making more horsepower and better gas mileage than Dodge's 4.7L V8, why bother? The Ford and Chevy powerplants are pretty weak though, the Colorado only has 4 and 5 cylinder options.

i have raced my friends 97 4.3 S-10 many times from a roll and from a stop and rip his doors off every time. they're fast, but i would fear a 4.0L Jeep cherokee. my dad has one and my friend with the S-10 wanted to race it and the Jeep had two truck lengths on him at 60mph, but he later caught me at around 75-80mph

My father bought his 92 Dakota, 5.2 used. It had a custom exhaust in it and it was tricked out. ARE Wheels, nice fender skirts, that kind of stuff. We said it was his second childhood. When he passed I inheirited it.

When it runs....right now it has a brain problem...nothing can catch it. My only problem with it has been that it is too light in the back for the engine. But on the other hand, I get 21 MPG with that monster and you will get no complaints from me.

I LIKE IT! A Sonoma...com'on, unless they dropped a 350 in it...you will smoke it. period.

I agree with the back end of the truck being too light for the engine, haha. I also decided to take my tailgate off, whether or not it does anything, I don't care. It looks pretty cool. I'd like to eventually drop a 360 into my truck, and really give unsuspecting people a run for their money.

Is there any way of getting more traction in the rear end without having to put a bunch of wait in box? Everytime I get on it the tires spin like crazy! Especially if it just rained.

The other day I pulled out of a parking lot in front of my ex-girlfriend's mom...I was taking a hard left trying to make it before the traffic got to me, and I let those puppies roar! I'm sure they enjoyed the rubbery aroma...

There is nothing wrong with a hundred pounds of something in the back over the axle either. The extra weight will help firm it up some.

As for the tailgate. Didn't you guys catch the Mythbusters when they bunked the myth of the up or down tailgate.... Seems that aerodynamically, it really makes a difference. The tailgate up creates an airflow that goes more smoothly over the vehicle. They actually took a couple of full sized trucks out and the one with the tailgate went another 40 or 50 miles farther down the road than the one without... Hmmmm Personally, I keep stuff in the back of mine, so I use the gate.

I do remember hearing about that episode of Mythbusters....I guess I just like to think that it's benefiting me. I wouldn't mind putting a snap down cover on though.

I rented a colarado last year with the 5 cylinder engine, this was before I bought my dakota r/t.
At the time it felt pretty quick in the low end with smoking tire, read one smoking tire, unlike my r/t I have 2 smoking tires and having to control the truck going sideways and losing it!
That 5 cylinder wasnt bad for what it was though, I thought it was a 6 until I looked under the hood.

Yeah. It's nice that the Dak's are still the ONLY V8 mid-size trucks.

Them VVT 4.0's in the Taco, Frontier, and I think even the Ranger now have higher advertised HP numbers. But that don't mean jack really. I bet a 230 HP 5.2 or 4.7 in SIMILAR trim and weight would still win.
The torque is a lot more on the Dak V8's. AND we sound a HELL of a lot better.

Last week we went to tow a Mustang back from Scottsdale to my bro in law's house out WEST by me.

On the way to Scottsdale I had just his trailer. Probably about 1,000 Lb.s unloaded. It was a back hoe trailer of some sort.

Anyway some mid 80's V8 Camero (probably a 305) was messing around. Probably due to my exhaust, I dunno.

I said "Too bad I have this trailer. We could play a bit". So finally I got on it from a few stoplights and that car was a manual and I actually took that car TWICE up to 60MPH before it was back to my rear bumper! LOL! THAT was funny as sh*t!

A few weeks ago I raced my friends 4.7 Toyota 4 runner. Beat that too :) They have DUAL OHC V8's, whoopity doo!

Anyway I think when toolfan said to lower the tailgate, he wassn't talking MPG or higher speed drag reduction. He meant to move the weight more behind the tires.
What worked for me was lowering tires down to 15 or 20 PSI. THEN it would not spin so badly! Then I got LSD and it is pretty good as long as I don't get it spinning too bad at start.

Down here in Memphis there is still some cruising and showing off in certain places especially Summer Ave. I used to burn 'em there with my Roadrunner, Dart 340 Sport, and my 396 Camaro. My "new" 99 Dak RT brings back the thrill! Smoked a coupla GMC and Chevy trucks this past Sat. Felt great to mash the pedal and ROAR! Brought tears to my eyes and chillbumps! This truck is gonna get me in trouble!! Signed, zoomin' senior citizen
