I am looking into the 1.7 RR for my '98 5.2 L. I have seen articals that say aluminum rockers are not really good for a street engine because they do not last too long, less than 50,000 miles or so. How long have has anyone had these in a truck and what where your impression of them, as good as a cam change, almost, or not worth the money.

what do you all know,
thanks,

nathaniel

Couldn't tell ya.. I run Crower Stainless 1.7s, and highly recommend them. Had them in sice 14k miles (at 58500 today)... No problems. PLUS they are rebuildable...

I've got 'em... www.socaldakota.com

i asked bernd if the rockers fail, and this was his responce...

"Kota: No, the rockers don't fail and I haven't heard of any other quality rockers failing either.."

if the rockers dont fail, why do they last less than 50k?

? for you bernd, not trying to stir anything up but i was just talking to john from southeast r/t and he say that the aluminum ones are just as strong as the steel rockers. what is really the deal between the two. do aluminum ones really wear after about 50000 miles?

I was looking in summit and in the "ask the professor" section they stated that on a mild street engine that aluminum rockers can last 100,000 miles. there was also a company that warrented the rockers for that long. but i forgot the name.

The Aluminum rockers don't normally fail, but 50K miles is quite a long time for those type of rockers. Most aluminum rockers will last but it depends on the metal used and the type of bearings. If lesser quality metal is used (or bearing material), they won't last as well as the higher grade models.

On the aluminum being just as strong as the steel...no way. Please keep in mind that Southeast R/T also offers Aluminum Rockers that state: "THESE ROCKERS WERE MADE SPECIFICALLY FOR THE R/T OUT OF HIGH QUALITY BILLET ALUMINUM".

Two things on that:

(1) Which Billet Aluminum (there's more than just one or two versions of it)
(2) Designed specifically for the R/T?!? The 3.9/5.2/5.9L use the same valvetrain...and it's the same valvetrain used on the Dakota/Durango/Ram/Jeep/Viper.

How hard is it to rebuild the Crower RRs? I believe they have Tempkin (SP) bearings. Do you you just press out the old and press in the new? How about the roller tips? Is this a Crower part?

You can send them direct to Crower and have them rebuilt-- They also have needle bearing upgrade that is being released.

Rebuild, if necessary, shouldn't be very much.
