Greetings One and All,

I just bought a 2001 CC Sport 4x4 from a friend of mine that was the original owner. Unfortunately before I was able to get the truck, he made the big mistake of allowing his 19 year old son to drive the truck. Prior to his son driving (and peeling the tires off at every opportunity) the truck ran fantastic. Now, it has been rear-ended twice, and he rear-ended somebody with it once.
His father had the truck taken to a dealer and had the front-end repaired and the engine was practically rebuilt. It has all the power (or at least seems to) that it had prior to the accident but.....it has this annoying tapping/ticking that is driving me nuts! I have read alot of posts in here and see that it could be anything from a collapsed Valve Lash to the possibility of a leaky Intake gasket.
It's there at start up (cold or warm) decreases slightly when at operating temperature, is in time with rev of the engine...(stays in step at all RPM's) it actually sounds like some little gremlin is in the upper part of the motor tapping the inside with a ball-peen hammer. I know there are a ton of post dealing with "Pinging" "Knocking" "Tapping", etc... believe me I have been reading all of them, I would like, if possible, to get some input from you folks to help narrow this puppy down. I found this site a while back and it has been exceedingly helpful.

I do not know if this will apply to your situation.

I have noticed a ticking on the right bank on my 4.7L. Oil changes did not help. I thought I had a big problem.

This weekend I ran Seafoam through it, 1/3 can in the crankcase, 1/3 can in the tank, 1/3 thru the brake booster vacuum line.

My ticking sound is gone and the engine runs better.

I know this is only observational info and not fact.

Hope this info helps.

Hope you ticking is not serious trouble brewing.

tlc361: Thanks for the reply. I have been investigating the Seafoam option. I'm not sure if it will help but im fairly sure that it can't hurt. Will keep you posted . Again Thanks!

Ok...bought some Seafoam. Put half a can in the crankcase and the other half in the gas tank. I'm gunna run some through the brake booster vaccumm line today.

Results thus far: Much quieter after engine has warmed up. Can now only hear the tapping with the windows rolled up and under a load. Still rattles like a diesel in the morning but it seems so far that it doesnt last as long as it was before.

Update to follow... Thanks!

Ok...ran with Seafoam in the tank, (Half a can) and in the crank case for almost 100 miles. Then did the "TB pour" thingy. Instead of using the vaccum hose off the brak booster, I took the airhat off and did it that way.

Funny thing to see really. Standing there holding the can in front of the throttle body, it had such powerful suction that it litterally drew the seafoam out of the can. I had let it take in more than half a can before I knew it. Watching that liguid fly out of the can into the intake was like watching some twisted trick from "The Matrix"...LOL.

Anyway, I let the engine stall out after a bit more than half a can and let it sit for 25 minutes. When I fired up the truck I had a nice billowing white clod of smoke. This was nice as teh mosquito's were just starting to come out for a bite (of me) and when I got the Dak started...guess what...BUG FREE... :D

So I changed the Oil and all that jazz and ran the truck up and down the Highway. Can you say "SMOOTH?" Throttle response was vastly improved and the tickking is now way way calmed down.
