Message: Just because you can doesn't mean you should.
Why do you want to change?
The clutch fan freewheels until heat causes it to engage. The Flex fan blades straighten out, losing aerodynamic efficiency with speed. Seems to me you would have more drag with the flex fan.
Your engine probably is at 2,000 RPM at 67 MPH.
Does the flex even work that slow?

Message: Flex fan is old technology. It was a decent improvement over the heavy fan clutch in the 60's and 70's. But this is a new century, and the flex fan won't help you.

I think it is older than clutches. Your grandpa's era.

Message: I have a supercharger and in the summer it likes to heat up when idling or stop and go traffic - I have done all I can with a new fan clutch, 3923'3, 180 stat, new radiator, pump...... I need a fan that can cool down my temps at low speed -
What else can I do? Cant afford the intercooler yet.

Message: I just looked at superchargersonline.com and found an Icevex intercooler for about the same price as the 180 flex-a-lite fan. From $234.00 to $249.00. Doesnt include plumbing but I'm thinking maybe I'll do that instead of an electric fan.
What do you all think?

Message: Yes, the flex fan has been around longer than I have. My point was that in the 60's and 70's, people were swapping out the stock heavy fan clutch for the flex fan. Not much point in doing that these days.
If you're not flowing enough air at low speeds, you need an electric fan or two. Get the biggest fan you can fit in there, and gat a thermostatic control. That really is the most efficient method. You've spent big bux on a blower, don't cheap out now.

I wish they were out when I bought my 150 cause thats what I would have gotten. At this point, I am seriously debating the upgrade. I am trying to get my brother to buy the 150.

Message: yah you told me about that story crow... i heard it was better to get a fan that doesnt fit, and move stuff around till it does. that way you got lotsa fan and less problems with air flow...do not attempt if you are subject to frustration

Message: I tried those flex fans years ago. Best test was a chev V8 I put in my 64 CJ5 . Flex fan was not the answer to cooling. Infact it did nothing except make a lot more noise. When the engine is running slow, so is the fan. Forget it. You need full force electric to get the job done
So many problems .... So little time

Message: Based on my own experience I would not even consider the flex a lite extreme 180. Had one on my 98 5.2 and found it was not even close to adequate, but I do live in Phoenix area. Also it was a bitch to mount it, had to fab my own brackets.

I know that the stock clutch fan thing isnt working (even with a new clutch.
What about a larger radiator - in a genII?

Message: Smitty,
My stock clutch fan wasn't working either.
I followed the advise of an old mechanic and felt the back of the radiator, after the engine was warmed up. Cold, except for the top 1/3 to 1/4!
With a new radiator, the fan works fine, because there is hot air to activate it.

Message: I have a newer radiator, water pump, thermostat and the list goes on... I have just realized that my newer clutch fan isnt working as I can stop it easily with the engine hot or cold. I am thinking that the clutch fan cant handle the additional power of a supercharger, hi flow heads and the cam I have and wears out prematurely. I ordered a flex210 electric fan from summit and will install it soon. I'm not sure i'll gain any horses since the clutch is wore out but maybe my overheating problem will be solved.

Message: Smitty,
The only way you'll know if the clutch fan doesn't work is overheating.
It may roar first thing in the morning. It ought to roar if really necessary when hot.
Otherwise it acts like nothing is happening.
You'll be able to turn it easily, only a bit of drag. If you spin it and it turns more than 1/4 turn it is bad.

Message: My cluch fan seldom comes on . When stone cold for about 4 or 5 blocks . When the engine gets shut down on a really hot day for less then half hour or so and if I let it idle for a good length of time with air on . That's about it, and I have no eLectric fan as newer ones do in combo.
So many problems .... So little time
