Message: Need some help with one here. Getting ready to put a '78 318 into an '88 2wd w/3.9 right now. I need to know what kinda motor mounts will work as a bolt in for this swap? The 318 has forward mounts , like a cylinder farther ahead of the V-6. Also , looks like electric fan time too , any ideas on how big of one will be needed? No A/C on this truck and in NW Ohio. Thanks in advance people. Looking forward to some good advice here.

Message: Go check out the 89' Shelby Dakota websites and chat with those guys. Shelby Dakotas came stock with a 318 and yes, they require PUSHER fans in front of the rad 'cause ders no space left!

Message: Check www.engine-swaps.com, they make a bolt in kit to put a V8 in dakotas but you will have to use an electric fan. We have an 88 with a 340 that we placed as far back in the engine compartment as we could so that we could run a flex fan. Don't go with the Shelby design, we wondered how they put them in when we were putting a V8 in our truck. A call to chryslers tech line got us nowhere, they told us the trucks were butchered to get them to fit so that's when we decided to custom fit ours. I've since seen a Shelby and it appears that the added an extra crossmember up front. But seriously go with Schumacher at www.engine-swaps.com, their kit is bolt in.

Message: Just gettin' pics of a Camaro. Anyway, I was just meaning if you hadn't actually done it, you wouldn't have known about the firewall/distributor issue that would occur if you used the stock radiator setup with a flex fan, thus requiring the engine to be moved back. I went the other way on my Shelby. Pulled the (heavy) electric fans out, got a radiator that'd fit (forward) in the radiator support, and used a flex fan. Engine remained in stock location. I'm in the process of reworking things with a new engine/tranny, and have a new flex fan that's much lighter, good to 10,000rpm, and cost $20. Looks even better now.

I was wondering if a certain year of v6 motor mount would work. Basically, tring to find a cheaper route than buying bolt in mounts. Any help would be greatly appereciated.

Message: I have a Shelby and I would rather have a pusher fan than a fan driven off of the engine, less parasitic drag and my cooling is independent of engine speed which comes in handy when you are stuck in traffic in hot weather.

at that point you didnt mention
"the engine was sat back farther, and a dimple was made in the bulkhead for clearance for the msd distributor.."
for the stock shelby mounts, you have less clearnace, which is what JW was talking about. If you dent up your firewall, build custom mounts and set the motor back, of course your gonna have room!
I believe craig was asking about a bolt -in swap..
i believe the only bolt in swap right now is www.engine-swaps.com
shelby mount brackets are not made anymore and probably very hard to find.

I have a 1989 Dakota Shelby that I have been restomoding for 9 years. I have also have had 3 other gen 1 daks. In the process I have acquired a good bit of info about what will and wont work on engine swaps and mods. Currently running the original 318 with alum heads, comp roller, FiTech, Performer intake, MSD ign, 347hp/358ftlb, a500 w OD, 2500 stall, 3.91. Would be happy to help. Open to email. Currently researching chg from auto to manual w OD.
