Subject: P0455-Where to start? IP: Logged
Message: Ihaven`t my truck long. It`s a `00 4.7 Dakota w/ 75k miles on it. The CEL came on on day 2. Truck drove/drives fine. Mileage sux tho, `bout 15-17. Well I noticed the gas cap wouldn`t close all the way so I got a new one. Reset the CEL. Now 3 days later, CEL again. Checked the code this time, P0455, Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (gross leak/no flow). Where do I begin? Would someone please point me in the right direction? I ain`t too computer savvy but I can work on the mechanical stuff. If it`s a sensor tell me where to look to swap out. Thanks for any and all help.

Message: Last 2 times I had that code appear it was a bad gas cap in both cases.
Are you certain the new cap is actually sealing? I think the second gas cap I replaced I had to reset twice before the code went away.

Message: Check all the hoses in the evaporative system - under the hood (there's a diagram), under the driver door inboard of the frame rail.

Message: I had the exact same code in my '01 QC 4x4 4.7L. I replaced the gas cap and located the charcoal canister under the truck. It's located just rear of the drivers seat. I pulled both hoses off (one slid off real easy, maybe it was leaking?)and cut about an inch off each one and put them back on. Then I reset my computer and had no more codes. Maybe this will work for you. Good luck!

Message: Thanks guys. I`ll check the vac can in the morning.
On a different note. Exactly how big a difference is there between the stock air filter box and a cold air intake? I`m putting one of those cold air jobs on in the morning and was a little curious of what to expect. Gas mileage is around 17.4 for an all around average. Will I see a noticeable difference there? I`m sure power will be effected but how noticeable is it?

Message: I would reccommend getting that code taken care of before installing the CAI. Just my .02 cents.

Message: Well, I disconnected the battree cable and went on ahead and installed the CAI. I followed most of the lines in the diagram under the hood. I checked the canister and the bigger of the 3 hoses did have a loose fit. So I cut a lil off and reinstalled. I put the battree cable back on and put about 60-80 miles, both hiway & city, on it. So far so good.

Message: Well, hopefully you fixed the problem and your check engine light will not come back on. I forgot to mention that I ended up putting hose clamps on the two larger hoses connecting to the evap canister. Glad you were able to get your CAI installed.
