Subject: 4.7 Oil Capacity Question IP: Logged
Message: I have an '00 with a 4.7. The manual call for 6 quarts (with a filter change). But everytime I change the oil and filter, the dipstick shows about a quart overfilled when I put in the full six quarts. I'm completely emptying the pan when I drain the oil, so that's not the problem. And I'm using a standard Purolator Pureone oil filter. Anyone have a similar experience?

Message: Mine does the same thing.. I'm only able to get about 5.5qts in. Have yet to figure that one out. Going to run some Auto-rx through it. I may have some build-up in the motor.

Message: My '00 4.7 is the same way - stick level appears to be about 1 qt over after changing the oil, filter, and running the engine. I would continue to put in the recommended quantity (6qts), and make a mental note of where "full" acually registers on the stick. I can only assume that Dodge didn't get the calibration marks on the stick in the right spot.

Message: I have a 2000 4.7 liter and put 6 qts in during oil and filter change, and it does appear to be about a half qt. high.
I would personally stick with the manufacturers recomendation and stick with 6 qts.

Message: 00 -- 4.7 2WD. I use 6 quarts, Pure one filters. Mine always looks fine. However I check it on a completely flat surface. (garage) I don't know if 4wd or tires would make any difference on the dipstick. I guess my truck sits right. (81000 miles, runs like new)

Message: I was using 6qts based on the big orange Dodge manual. After talking to a mechanic at Dodge, he said to go with 5.5 quarts as others to on this post have mentioned. Since using 5.5 with an oil and filter change, the level is right on the full mark.

Message: Go with the six quarts and run 5w-30 in the 4.7 V8. Don't worry about what the dipstick reads. I've been doing that for 142,000 miles and my 4.7 runs great.
