Subject: stroke 318 or 360?
IP: Logged

Message:
Well,

I've been TRYING to do a V8 conversion on my dakota but I havnt found a 360 anywhere nearby...I did find a 318 for a steal! My plans for this motor are to abuse it lol... well, not really but I want to stroke it (360 to a 408 or a 318 to a 390) and it would possibly have forced induction in the end (super charger, turbo, etc... far future though)...

My question is, which block would be safer to stroke? I am looking for longevity really because if I go with a 318, then I will only be missing out on 18 cubic inches and how much of a difference could that possibly make? I need some guidance please! I have my heart set on the 360 but if a 318 will last longer then that's better!

I was also wondering about balance.. I know one is internally balanced and the other is not... Should I consider this as well? help me out please!

Thanks,
-Jason

You're gonna be taking either block .030 over on the bore. Long term life would be the same. For added protection, use moly-coated piston rings. These bring more oil to the top of the cylinders where greatest wear occurs, and they work. Either engine will need to be re-balanced, so again, no difference in what you'll have to do. 18 cubes could make 10-25hp difference, depending on your setup, but don't beat yourself up trying to decide. There's always someone out there with even more power.

You might want to concider that supercharging a stroked motor might not work the way you want.

and you may want to consider backing your statement with some logical reasoning.. how would it not work? Just curious... Is the Super charger going to slow me down lol

Well the reason would be that your going to be spending alot of money on the SC and alot of money on the stroker kit why not just go cheaper and go with a small shot of nitrous. Not to good with SC but i do know you can't go all out on the motor and throw on a blower because it doesn't work.I'm building a 408 stroker right now and with 500+ hp and a huge shot of nitrous i don't need a little SC.

I will answer for thatguy.

The problems that you will run into with supercharging any engine is the boost vs. n/a compression ratio. vehicles that come from the factory with some type of boost usually have low compression ratios compared to the n/a version.

If you were to build up a kick a$$ N/A engine, it would not be very well suited for boost because of the high compression. If you really want to stroke the 318/360 a long time before you add boost, you should try and set the valve train up to work both n/a and boost with maybe just a cam swap. Same for the compression. Go ahead and build the stroker. Then when it comes time to add boost, drop the compression by swapping pistons.

Well said CROW318. Pretty much just what i said but with better words i'm not good with words but i was kinda on the right track. What he said though you can build the engine and stroke it the way you want but keep the compression under like 9:1 and if you go under that you can run more boost. More compression you have to run less boost. I'm more for nitrous but the SC is constant power from idle.

If it fits the budget a blower is the way to go.

Yes, I would like to get a SC but now you've got me concerned, Thumper, saying if I go all out on the motor, I can't use a S/C... Hmmmm
