Get a Chilton's or Haynes. At very least, go to your
local library, & readup on it - make some photo copies.
The hardest part will be removing the damn fan. It's a
nice Saturday project. You can get a cheap set of tools
at Homey Depot or Blows, get the pump with gasket, the
Dodge service manual & porbably still be under the $415
mark. Plus it will be a learning exp.

And most of all, get a NEW pump and not a rebuild. Otherwise you may become too familiar with changing a water pump.

Not to throw a wrench into the works, but ditch the
mech fan & get the black magic one for your truck.
Less strain on the pump = more HP & longer pump life.

What Tony said.
If you can afford the black magic fan, it will be worth it since you will already have the old clutch fan removed for the water pump replacement.

Go to google advanced search and enter dodgedakotas.com and do a search for the fan and pump. Do a regular web search also.

Even if you buy all new tools, you will still save money. Just have a vehicle available so you can run to the store every hour or so. :)

Black magic... that a heavy duty electrical fan or something. I may eventually do something like that myself. That clutch fan is a dog when you're trying to lay the hammer down. LOL That and it sounds like I'm trying to take off of a runway. Loud and irritating.

Err actually I don't know. I actually meant "Black magic... that a heavy duty electrical fan or something" as a question, but it is early, and I haven't had any coffee yet. I do believe what you are hearing in the morning though is that clutch fan though.

tools for the black magic - having just tore mine
apart after 4 years of being in the Dak, I no you
will need a crimping tool for the connectors -
needle nose will work in a pinch. 13mm wrench - think
that's it. & after 4 years you will need to rip it
out like i did this weekend & clean the contacts.

The pump you will need a ratchet set - 3/8" will do,
flat head scre driver for hose clamps, channel locks
for those s*** spring clamps on the hose, razor to
scrpae away old gasket material, um that's it for
tools off the top of my head. Dont forget antifreeze.
I use that new stuff (yellow i think for chrysler).
