Subject: EMERGENCY Oil Cap stuck!! IP: Logged
Message: OK, I am just trying to change the oil for the first time since I got my Dak (95, VR, 4X4) and I got the old oil out, plug back in, filter off and new filter on and now I can't get the frickin oil cap off.
If keep clicking like the plastic part is not gripping the metal insert. Like a baby-proof medicine bottle that you can't push down enough to get it off. I've got to go to work in the morning and have no idea what to try next. I have been fightin this for 30 min and getting pissed.
And yes I have changed oil before many times - even on two older Daks I owned in the past. And no, I am not turning it the wrong way.
Any ideas? Can I pry off the plastic part and try to remove the inner cap with a tool of some kind? I have no idea what it looks like under the plastic since all the other oil caps I have tried to remove came off with no problem.
The engine is still warm. Would letting it sit help at all?
Arrgh!

Sounds like the answer if it won't come off after it cools down. But I have always changed the oil when the engine is pretty warm so the old oil runs out easily. And all the quick lube places are doing it hot.
Do most of you change the oil hot, warm or cold?

Message: You definitely want to change the oil hot to get as much of the old dirty oil out of there. Guess you gotta fill cold though;)

Message: OK, I got it off after letting it sit a while longer. It still was a bear to get off. I guess I have to plan on an hour oil change at home if I want to start hot.
Frustrating!

Message: i was a tech at chrysler for 4 years and this happened with the grand cherokees all the time. just pry the upper part of the cap off with a screwdriver and then remove the lower part (wich threads into the v/c) with a pair of pliers. when finished, the two just snap back together. dunno im cheap, i probably wouldnt spring for a new cap.

Message: I had the same problem with a 3.9 I had.. My solution was to remove the cap, pry it apart and epoxy glue it together.. No more stuck filler cap :-)

It still amazes me how much more peppy a vehicle feels after an oil change. I went from whatever the previous owner was using to a Valvoline full synthetic and recently added some other typical mods like Accel cables, K&N filter charger kit, high-flow Magnaflow cat and a Flowmaster 40 dual cat back system. So I am enjoying it!

Message: I had the same problem on my 318. I just pulled off the top of the cap. It comes off. Then twist the part sticking out with a pair of pliers. Works everytime.

Message: By the way, I went and got a new cap before I did this. they are only about $5-8 at the local NAPA store. Look identical to the original and work the same.

Of course the 4.7 oil cap isn't made like that and it is right up front :) That's the nice part once you've gone through the trouble of changing the oil filter where they tucked it up in there.

Message: Yeah that happens all the time on these trucks. I never had it happen on my R/T yet, but I did have one lady who came into the shop whose wouldn't come off. So I took a screw driver and popped the top off and I didn't even need pliers to get out the base. It just unscrewed with a rag covering my fingers. I didn't put it together because she insisted on going to buy a new one so i just gently screwed the base back in when she was done adding her oil. She tipped me $5 though, and I was just doing it to be nice. But yeah daffy has the best solution it seems.

Message: Its time to do an oil change on my truck, and I cant get the damn factory cap off. It just clicks... So should I follow the advice from all the men who have posted on this site, and pry it off with a screwdriver and then unscrew the inner part with a pair of pliers... or just leave it be and have the dealership do it when the next service date comes around?

Message: I had the same problem, not with the truck, but with my 2000 Chevy Malibu. Investigation discovered antifreeze getting into the oil, and swelled the rubber under the cap. When I removed the cap, I broke off the hard filter material underneath the rubber seal. Some might have dropped in the engine, I don't know. Now I find that the intake manifold needs to be replaced to keep the antifreeze out of the oil, and vise-versa. What started as a relatively minor problem, so I thought, is now a big deal. Go figure.
