Subject: Auto Tran Jerking During Acceleration IP: Logged
Message: Just bought a 99 Sport 5.2 Auto w/ 73k. Love it! Could have a problem with the transmission. While getting on the freeway I am experiencing some small chugging problems while accelerating around 50mph. When I get up to speed (65mph), it has no problems. Anybody heard anything about this? The truck only does it when accelerating up a small hill on ramp. Any Ideas?
Thanks!

Message: I have the same problem or close enough. Although I own a six cyclinder and it does it only when I need it. Usually when I rev out the gears to a high mark it will shudder at the transition. Not sure, but it makes me think sometimes that it is either faulty fluid ( needs to be changed, or add friction modifiers ), or the TPS is not doing its job properly. I also have a ping at around a lull 1900 RPMs and in strange gearing ratio. In others words, not a "sweet spot." If you check around ( search the archives ) unders the characteristics you talk about, most will ask you if you are using ATF 3+ (Mopar 7176) or better (ATF 4+) in your tranny. Thats a start. Also, it good practice to know where your fluids and intervals stand, meaning maybe you should do a tranny flush and put new filter and fluid in. Thats important if you want to keep your tranny. Might want to consider synthetics, I hear that is the way to go. I am looking in to synthetics as we speak so no recommendation from me. I still use the ATF 3+, but that is why I am considering an alternative in fluid.

PS Also, worst case scenario, you might have to have the tranny rebuilt. But before asking a mechanic for them to biasly opinionate your tranny, might want to try synthetics - Amsoil universal ATF or Redline C+ ATF. Your mileage isn't that high, so like I said worst case scenario.

Message: When my 99 cc 4x4 5.2 auto was new I took a trip to the coast. Coming home I made a fuel stop and the freeway entrance was long and steep. at about 30 or 35 mph I nailed the gas and the trany started a banging jerk thing that scared me bad. I let off the gas and it stoped. Hit the gas again and it did the same thing. To this day I don't knowe why it did this but it never happened again. The way it felt I got the impression it was jumping between gears.

Message: When i bought my 99 5.2 4x4 auto with 61,000 it did something like what you said. It was a cat. converter. I would have the Trans. fluid changed completly , not flushed, they will use this machine that doesn't clean it out if you say you want it flushed. Make sure they shop puts the right fluid back in. Just say you want ATF 4 and go buy your own case of it and say you want the empties back too lol.

Message: OBIO3,
That is exactly what my tranny does when I ask it to drive a little less conservatively. I wonder why it went away in yours, mine does it a little more frequently than 'randomly,' but only under strenuous conditions.
On a side note, do you run synthetic ATF? And did it do this while you were using synthetic ATF? I am asking cause I am considering using synthetics to get rid of this problem. Its a gamble but it should help my transmission out over-all even if it doesn't fix it.

Message: I think its a combination of TPS and or TV cable out of sync. The computer is looking for throttle position versus road speed. When the signal is wrong to the computer, it reacts as if its a good signal, since it knows no difference. I would look at TPS and then experiment with the TV cable. If the trans fluid is dirty or burnt, of course change that as well. It can also be just a faulty logic from DC. My 98 Dak has had several instances where the computer logic was faulty and the trans went crazy for a instance. When that happens, simply let off the gas and then accelerate, but not as aggressively.

Message: RWrenches,
Thanks for that reply. I am considering doing the TPS swap for a new one. Won't hurt. And yes, thats exactly what I do when it acts up - let of the gas pedal. It corrects itself almost immediately. However, I am unaware of the mention of computer logic. Is that just a general meaning that there is something faulty with the computer and cannot be traced back to any sensor or anything? I hope that is not the case. this happened or started to happen at about 30K after the tranny was rebuilt and after 6-month warranty. I wonder if it has any affect on the clutches inside the tranny and if this is some thing serious. Otherwise I can live with it.

Message: Guys thanks for the help, I was told the fluids were changed during the 60k service 10k ago. I think I'm going to just change the Tran fluid and filter and see if I have anymore problems.
Anybody else see "TPS" and "TV Cable" and think Office Space? Did you get the Memo??? Maybe just me. :)

Message: Under maximum acceleration in first, right around red-line, the fuel pump runs out of oomph. Can't supply enough gas. Too much volume too fast. That's why that doesn't happen in higher gears, then it can keep up.
Are we discussing the "hunting" for a gear shifting from first to second? I've heard that is an endearing Dodge charactoristic.
