Subject: Tranmission Issue IP: Logged
Message: Just started having a real issue with the transmission. Or I think it's the transmission. At about 35 mph it starts to shutter and by the time I'm doing about 70 it is a major vibration. If I let off on the gas and coast it stops and is smooth as can be. My shop is not sure what it is so they called the dealer and were told to put the ATF+4 into the trans, that was helping with shutter issues. They did that on Friday and I drove it about 25 miles this weekend and it's just as bad, plus when I stopped it smelled like something was burning, kind of like what I smell in our machine shop. Does anyone have any ideas?? Shifts just fine. It's a 99 Dakota 4x4 with the 5.2 V8 in it. About 88,000 miles. Any thoughts would be most appreciated.

Message: Check you U-Joints and if you have a 2 piece drive shaft check the center bearing. Have you had any work done to the drivetrain? I would really be looking at that....

Message: I have not had any work on the drivetrain since about 30,000 miles when the u-joit bolts broke. I can't remember if they replaced that u-joint or not, but I will pull my paper work and pass this on to my shop. I talked with him today and he suggested this also might be the problem. Thank you for the help. I appreciate it. I love the truck, but it sure has had it's problems.

Message: I don't have as much experience as a mechanic would, but that is a pretty obvious problem to pin point. I find it peculiar that that wasn't noted eariler from your mechanic. Maybe you didn't explain it well enough to the mechanic? But if you did, I would have a difficult time trusting that mechanic.

Just my point of view. Hope it helps.

Message: I have an appt for Monday and I'm pretty sure it's the u-joints. I did have one replaced at 33,000 miles and my notes were the same as they are now. My mechanic said he checked them, but i know he didn't take the drive shaft off so, not sure how he was able to check. He was doing other stuff on the truck and I don't think he was in the mood to screw with it that day. I hear a small squeak now, so I've parked the truck till Monday when I can go chew him out. I think he's sick of seeing it. It's had a lot of work done on it in the last couple of weeks!!! Just basic stuff, but it needed doing. I'll let you know. Thanks for the help you guys!!

Message: You can check em with out taking the shaft off. Make sure he checked the fluid in nuetral not park. I have a 99 5.2 4x4 auto and at 86,000 the torque converter went bad and i had it replaced with a reman. could be u-joints though

Message: I work in the heavy duty industry, work for Kenworth trucks, it is amazing at how many mechanics don't check u joints for wear, i have seen on many highway tractors u joints ready to fall right out of yokes, u joints and tires are the major causes of vibration around my shop.
Most of the time they don't vibrate until at Highway speed, also make sure the mechanic can check the balance of the driveshaft as it could be slightly bent.

Message: Bev,
Not sure with all trucks/cars per se, but the eaisest way I know to check for driveshaft knock and failure is to drive it. If there is a 'vibration' going on and can be felt in the cab at a decent speed.... well, that is the way to check. As for a mechanic, I wonder if they drive your car around the parking lot for show or if they are actually trying to tell if anything is wrong. ( At leat mine does that. I think its more policy than preventive and helpful maintenance. ) anyways, its easy once you notice the vibration. just get under the vehicle and see if you can rotate the drive shaft. If you can then there you're problem. Note: my drive shaft on the 89 dakota has a little play naturally. I am talking about a faulty amount of play noticable while driving. there is going to be a difference. Late nite visit herre. hope this helps and makes sense.
Good luck!

Did they scare you by telling you what might have happened?
Isn't your truck fun when it runs right?
