Not a mechanic, need help!!
92 dakota 4x4 5.2L 318

My radiator is leaking, I found a place that will fix it for me but I have to take it out of the truck. I have no idea how to do this. Is it a fairly simple DIY or should I just leave it for someone who knows better?

Also, is there anything else I should be worried about, such as water pump or thermostat, or bleeding the engine?

Thanks for any help!

I agree. Dont save a couple buck by getting it fixed because chances are you are going to have another leak in that radiator. It is very easy to remove. Take of two bolts on the bottom of the fan shroud. Shroud will come out from the top. There are two little clips in the top. You wont have to take the fan off if you leave the shroud loose off the radiator. Next there will be two bolts on each side of the radiator towards the top. Unbolt those and the radiator will come right out. With the fan shroud loose you can just ease the radiator out so you wont have to worry about removing the fan.

If you have a seperate tranny cooler you wont have to worry about the lines. If yours is in the radiator you will have to undo both of them. When you put them back on, put some pipe thread sealer on them and tighten them until you feel the threads lock. Then go maybe 1/2-1 turn. You dont have to get the lines supertight or they could strip.

This is a good time to flush your cooling system. Take a hose (as long as you dont have rusty water....) and spray it in the hose untill you see just water comming out the other hose.

Install the radiator in reverse order as you took out. Connect the upper and lower hoses. Add coolant till it reaches the top of the radiator. run the engine to temp. Let it cool off and top it off. The cap will bleed the system of air.

Anymore questions, just ask.....

Thanks for the info, and for getting back to me so quickly. I'm going to take your advice and just get a new one, I was calling parts counters all over town and finally the last place I called can have one here for me tomorrow.

The instructions sound simple enough, I'll give it a shot. It won't be easy, why does everything have to be packed so darn tight under that hood? hehe

I ordered my last radiator from them. Good prices and quick turn around. If you can wait, it will probably save some money. If you have to get it fixed this weekend, then a local parts store is your best bet. Good luck, it is a fairly easy process.

Packed tight???? LOL...you should work on a few front wheel drive or any newer car for that matter then these trucks will seem easy.

One more thing though. Some of the stuff on your truck could be a bit different since it is a 92 and mines a 96 but it should all be about the same. Like I said dont hesitate to ask before doing something your not sure about. Its pays to do it right the first time...
