Subject: ho cams suck, need 4.10s IP: Logged
Message: i just got my ho cams in and i was a little upset on the way home. i thought why did my other truck feel such a power gain compared to this one. i had a 2000 dakota but it was awd which sucks power. i figure i could feel it more cause those 2000-2002 intake manifolds were better at the torque around town (although not better at horsepower) and my old truck had 3.92 gears and this one has 3.55 SO, now i seriously need some 4.10 gears to give this thing the rpms it needs. question is what brands do you recomend and which one can i get for cheapest, but still has quality at least like stock.
some sources for purchase would be nice. i already know about accugear.com

Message: It seems like it's your gears that suck not the cams. Don't the ho cams bring in more mid to high rpm power? I don't know, that's why I'm asking.

Message: 4.10 gears can be tough to live with in a daily driver. Unless you've installed some really tall tires, you'll find that a 4.10 will rev pretty high at freeway speeds, and suck fuel.
With stock size tires, I think 3.92 is kind of pushing it for 75-80 mph cruises. With 30" tires and a 4.10 gear, your rpm's will be about 2100@65mph. At 80, your rpm's will be about 2600. Try turning off the OD and driving at 65-70mph now, and see what those rpm's feel like to you.
If you have 2wd, consider a Gear Vendors underdrive. You really can have it all.

Message: I made that swap and find the 4.10's very livable. Stock size tires (31x10.5-15) measure about 30"; milage went from 15mpg before to almost 16 now.
A bit more power through the whole range with HO.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Message: I did the swap from 3.55's to 4.10's and my mileage went up slightly. At 80 i'm doing 2400 rpm's which is not bad at all. I can also cruise at just over 40 mph in overdrive at 1400 rpm's. Also added an auburn limited slip too. I think the 4.10's are the perfect gear for an auto trans. I run 31 inch tires.

Message: Yup I did the HO cams with the 3.55 gears in the truck. I did not feel really anything with my butt dyno.
Swapping to the 4.56 LSD was the only thing that really registered on my butt dyno.
Last weekend when I drive back from the high country of Arizona down to the Phoenix area on the highway and then through some city driving I got 16.7 MPG mixed. I think that was pretty good!
If I think they 4.56's are just fine I would not even hesitate on throwing in 4.10's. That's a no brainer. I knew if my 4.56's were a little extreme on my 4X4, I could always go up some tire sizes :) So far I'm ok with my 29" stock height! I may go to 31's or 32's next time though.

Message: thanks for the experiences. with a possible gain in gas mileage and the obvious acceleration benefits, seems i cant go wrong.
i see motive gears on ebay. what do you guys think of them. seems the only way i can buy the parts for $200 or less.
what gears do you recomend that i can still get for a low price?

Good luck and the 4.10s are just right IMO.

Message: 3.92's are the minimum for a truck, 4.10's are sweet gears. You will notice a huge gain with them. You mileage will go up if you stay under 65-70 with them also.

Message: I went from 355 to 410 with the 4.7 auto. Love em. She does cruize a little high on the highway but with the overdrive its not too bad. Worth the added low end grunt for sure!!! As long as you can get her to hook!!!
