Subject: Distrubutor Advance or Retard on 5.2L

Message:
I have an 87 5.2L and when I go to take off or pull a trailer the truck stalls like its getting to much gas or something but then it will finally take off after easing into the gas. I just gave the truck a complete tune up and it still does it. Im thinking maybe the distributor needs advanced or retarded but Im not sure. If so how do you do it on a 87 5.2L?

A fairly simple way, involves a little trial-and-error. You can still adjust the initial timing with a twist of the distributor. Loosen the retainer bolt and twist the dist. counter-clockwise a smidge. Then, go for a drive. See how it does. You can get away with more initial advance if you're running a higher octane gas, so that's a variable to consider, but if the lag goes away (after normal operating temp is achieved), and it's not knockin' (too much advance), try it out with a trailer and see if it'll knock under a heavy load. Now, while hot, does it sound like it's struggling to start? If so, you need to go back the other way a little. These are fine movements, doesn't take much. The trick is to balance everything. Just remember, if you're running fine under normal conditions, you may still have pre-ignition when heavily loaded, or in very hot conditions, so a higher octane gas would help in those conditions. Usually, in my experience, you can get away with around 5 degrees initial advance (in the deep south/summer) while running on 87 octane with the typical 318 in a Ramcharger. If you have a carburetor, how fresh is it? The accel. pump in the carb may be giving up. Something else to consider.

i agree with genI on the accel.pump sounds like the problem, not enough fuel to much air on starting from a dead stop, worse with trailer beyond you,

does it have kind of a flat spot at cruising speed when you step down on it?[like to pass someone]

My opinion...... If the truck has/had been running proper And slowly got to the point you desided something wasn't correct then I doubt it's going to be a timing issue THAT CAN BE CORRECTED BY ADJUSTING TIMING. Ignition is more reliable over the long haul then fuel delivery provided you do regular tuneups. First guess is as stated. Accelerater pump in carb.Remove the air hat and lok down the carb bore ((ENGINE NOT RUNNING)) Open yhe thtottle mediam fast and see if carb delivers a good shot of gas. If it looks good, Check a few things in your ignition system. Pull the dist cap and try to wiggle the dist shaft. Your looking for worn bushings. Does your dist have a vacumn advance. Pull the vavumn hose off it and stick one on you can suck on and hold from leaking down with your tongue. It should leak ZERO. No other answer is correct. Next pull a plug wire while running. Should have a nice blue spark. Any thing else is unacceptable. If not blue check coil first. Then plug wires. How old are your plugs. If you got a ZILLION miles on them change.Wouldn't hurt to check timing to if your finding nothing. Mostly your interested in if the advance is working proper. You may have bad mechanical advance in dist. Week or busted springs. Somewhere here you should find your answer. These simple seemingly miner eratating things can be the hardest to find. Murphys law applies. Enjoy the hunt.

So many problems .... So little time
