Subject: Extra Horsepower?
IP: Logged

Message:
My air condition is shot. If I were to buy a different serpentine belt to by-pass the A/C unit, would I gain any Horsepower/Torque?
Also, my fan is run off the engine, is it worth it to purchase an electrical fan? If so, what kind of gains can I expect?
Thanks

The A/C pulley acts as an idler when the A/C clutch is not engaged, and its drag on the engine is minimal. Just disconnect the connector to the A/C clutch (usually at or on the compressor), and leave it. Unless the A/C clutch is just bad or frozen or siezed, you should have no further problems, and no noticeable drag on the engine.

Thanks Dark Jedi and Josh.
I mean my A/C compressor is shot. Instead of running it off the belt, and just not using the compressor, would there be a gain? I guess I didn't understand what you said Josh.

By the way, I could reference other sources of information, but I assumed that since you all are dakota owners, that one of you may have the first hand knowledge that I was looking for. It should be a compliment that I want to find stuff out through you guys. Thanks for all the help anyways, have a good day.

i have the bypass belt on mine for the same reason with the A/C being no good. i didnt notice any gains in gas or power, so your better off just leaving it the way it is.

i think the electric fan is a good idea along with some underdrive pulleys. i notice a increase in power when my steer pump ran out of fluid and had less drag.

the bypass alone isnt gonna do anything worth $35 for the belt, but the uderdrive pulleys and the electric fan should be a noticeable increase.

Luke, Mr Google didn't have the answer, that's why he referred to Google. The fact is if everyone used Google instead of just asking questions there would be no use for this forum. These morons most likely have stock in Google.

The clutch on the A/C should be freewheeling but it's worth taking the time to remove the belt and make sure it spins free. Keep in mind that even a freewheeling pulley or idler creates drag and uses power.

My clutch went out in my AC and the pully fell off, I used a lot shorter belt and bypassed the AC But the belt slipped because it goes the wrong way across the tensioner. I took out the alternator bolts like my old chevy truck and put some spacers(washers) for the time being. But it still slipped when you crank the tires to one side or the other. No HP gaines noticed. Just a quick fix to get me by until I got my new clutch assembly from dodge.
