Subject: New cat, now it's chugging
IP: Logged

Message:
Last weekend my 2000 4.7 4x4 lost all power and was running like crap. Took it into the Dodge shop and they said the plugs needed replaced and the cat was plugged. So, I replaced the plugs and took it into the local muffler shop and had the cat replaced. Well, the power is back but now when I'm accelerating without getting on it, the motor is chugging kind of bad. It hesitates a little or just kind of bounces along. I'm thinking that the computer needs to relearn how everything is running since she can actually breath again. Anyone else have any other ideas?

Reset the cumputer by doing this:
Disconnect battery, turn key to start and hold for about 15 seconds or so with foot on brake pedal, then reconnect battery.

Start it up and let it idle for about a minute or so, then take it for as test drive.

I would be very surprised if resettung the computer well solve your problem. To reset it, it will be learning EVERYTHING same as factory new. To leave it where it is, not all settings will need to be reset by the computer. several have to do with how you drive. Either way it will take about 200 miles before everything is relearned. I'm betting you have new plugs gaped way way to wide or way to small. Next choise is plug wires crossed. Maybe some of each. You may also have busted the porcelen on one 1 or more plugs installing them. easy to do.A pluged cat can also destroy a 02 senser. And this may take a little driving to throw the code.

So many problems .... So little time

I'm thinking the O2 sensor is screwed. The check engine light came on yesterday and it's still chugging pretty bad. I'll probably take it into the shop when I get back from my business trip and have them put it on the computer.

I gapped the spark plugs, so that wouldn't be the problem plus this is the 4.7 V8 which has individual distributers, so there is pretty much no way to cross up the the wires. Thanks for the ideas though.
