Just wanted to check in with the dakota board.
I just picked up a 2003 black dakota RC 5.9 R/T with 26,000 miles on it. No mods yet, hopefully an intake and maybe exhuast later. The truck is great I didn't expect the speed and power it puts down for a truck. The only down side so far is gas mileage (it's not there) only about 11-15 mpg.....WOW thats gonna take a toll, but well worth the fun.

Welcome, and nice purchase.

Moral of the story: Don't buy *any* pickup (especially one inteded for a little spirited driving) with light gas consumption in mind, that's what Neons and Corollas are for.

It's the price we pay for what we have under our right foot.

What's your left foot doing?

good purchase, and a home made intake and a good exhaust system wakes these trucks up. shaved a second off my 0-60mph time with just that.

and another good mod is a Trans-Go shift kit. those are about $170 installed.

How do you build a homebrew for a 5.9? Do you leave the airhat intact and just attach a tube?

i have the exact truck and have got between 13.5-16.0 mpg.i drive her pretty hard some times.i am just wondering why you or when you are getting below 13mpg if you know? as far as home brew intake if you do not have lotsa $$ they have tubes to make your own.

2003flrt, I only have had the truck now for about a week, probably not long enough to get good milage estimates. I get on it alot, because I love the feel of being pushed back into my seat, which I know decreases my milage.
As far as intake, do you just attach a filter to 3" abs or tubing then connect it all to the stock airhat over the TB?

great buy for sure but dont waste your time on homebrew you are just teasing your self i know bc i did the same thing save the money get k&n fipk and notice a real diffrence, get a m1 intake, also look around for 52mm tb, set of headers, and b&g flash and you will notice huge diffrence do the stuff right not this tape some tubing together and grind stuff down for better air flow it works alittle but not much at all

01 rc r/t mods i have:m1,gibon headers,1.7 rr,b&g flash,52mm tb,cat-back,vortech supercharger, and currenlty having a 408 stroker built now

like i said if you don't have the $$$ FIPK is around $200. as far as HB you connect it to airhat. you will have rubber coupler between airhat and tube.then put filter on end of tube.don't forget clamps(3)at least 4". go to autozone they have aluminum tubes for that or home depot will have pvc. remove rubber flap on left side of engine(facing from the front) and you can pipe it so filter is in front of opening.
