99 5.2 4x4 auto. Went to get an oil change yesterday at a place I have been going to since I bought the truck at 47,000 miles now has 96,000. The guy changinf my oil said that Castrol 20w 50 is better for my motor with this many miles. Said it would stop the small leak I have( not plenum gasket either, I checked). I noticed oil leaking from the passenger side of the block, looked like coming out of oil filter. I brought this to the techs attention and he said its a valve cover gasket but I did not see any coming from there. I told him to go ahead and try what he thinks. Is this grade going to cause anymore problems? So far it seems ok but is still leaking....

Thicker oil is not better oil. Thicker oil takes more energy to move around, and puts more strain on parts like the oil pump, oil pump drive, valve train, and distributer.

Thicker oil will not stop an oil leak. And the oil leak is most likely coming from the valve cover. But could also be distributer or oil pressure sensor.

Viscosity should be enough to maintain proper pressure, and no more. Some new cars require 0W-20 oil. Some NASCAR teams are experimenting with straight 0 weight oil for more power.

I think that oil may be too thick to flow adequately, and you could cause damage to your engine. Would be more worth your while just to have the leak fixed. Quite frankly, it sounds more like your tech is a "band-aid" tech than an actual mechanic. If the leak is indeed coming from the filter, make sure there isn't a leftover filter gasket stuck to the block. Fram was (and is still?) notorious for their rubber gaskets peeling off.

No way on that 20 50 drop it to 10 30 If you want protection get
some luces oil stabliser, put that in there and change the oil
sending unit or switch, and replace the valve gaskets they are
known to leak on these ones, go w a rubber one.

If you are in a cold weather area, snow/ice, freezing temperatures, 20W50 will make it harder to start. It's gonna gel. Trust me on this.

20W50 IS NOT the way to go. I agree with .boB

Just dropped it this morning. I put 10 30 in it. Noticed it might be the rear main seal. what does this envolve? Vavle covers seem fine. Where is the oil sending unit/switch located?

The guy had no business telling you to do this. Even in summer, circulation of oil is going to be slow when starting out cold. At 95,000 you should have little if any wear provided oil was changed reasonably. 10-30 is what you want and stick with it reguardless of miles. DO NOT ad any aditives. Your owners manual tells you never to do this. Oils now days have plenty of aditives already and in the proper amount to protect your engine correctly. The only exceptions would be seafoam and autorex. Both of hese are engine cleaners and do nothing to thicken your oil. Both must be used EXACTLY as stated on the container. My opinions only bases on my experances.

So many problems .... So little time

Is it recommended to clean the engine at this many miles (96,000). Could i clean it out with just changing to Mobil 1 extended (15,000 miles until change) but change it at 5,000, would this clean anything? i know the mobil 1 extended has more cleaning agents then regular synthetic.

this stuff isnt a harsh cleaner. yo urun it for 1500 miles and drain and run a rinse phase of 2000. this stuff world over time. well worth the money. and alot of peopel swear by this product.
