Subject: 02 QC 4x4 4.7 - protective plate?
IP: Logged

So in Jan I traded in my 95 CC 4x4 3.9L for an 02 QC 4x4 4.7L Auto. I just did my first oil change last night and noticed something I think is odd.

The oil filter, transmission cooler and lower radiator hose are out in the open. easily hit and damaged by debris from the road or pot holes, etc.

On my old 95 there was this this protective metal plate that covered this gap where my lower radiator hose was. I had to remove this to get to the lower hose and radiator drain. The oil filter was tucked up higher and little bit harder to get to.

Is there supposed to be a protective metal plate there? Did i get screwed? Or is the 02 that badly designed?

I'm not comfortable at all with the oil filter being located where it is at.

any of you folks with an 02 QC 4x4 4.7 have any pictures of under the vehicle right by the front bumper?

I have an 01 QC 5.9L.
it has a plastic "plate" right behind the bumper under the radiator area. It has an access plug that says something about "V10 Oil Filter access" on it I think. It threw me for a loop on my first oil change a few years ago.

Willing to bet they stopped including that as a "cost savings" measure.

I have an 02 QC 4x4 and it has a plastic protector under the radiator and drive belt. There is an access hole to get to the oil filter, you have to remove the plastic cover to get to the oil filter. Everything is covered under there. Although it is plastic, there is something supposed to be there.

I have the plastic plate on my 02 QC 4x4 also. although it does have a small crack in it, it is still there doing its job. Maybe the truck was wrecked and they didn't put that piece back on to save money when they put it together. I don't see any other reason why someone would remove it.

I just purchased it from a dealer in Jan. They did an oil change on it and an inspection so I'm guessing they removed it and never replaced it.

I will stop by dealer and ask about it.

thanks,

Good luck. This stuff goes out the door fast. either the dump or someones garage. Good dealers don't collect junk. Those places are clean as it gets.

So many problems .... So little time

I have the same plastic protective plate on my '01 QC 4x4. Maybe somone took it off to have easier access to the oil filter and never put it back on. Our oil filters are such a pleasure to change. LOL!

Thanks for all of the answers.

I stopped by the dealer today. I have an appointment next wednesday.

They are going to order a replacement plastic shield though I had them order a skid plate for the front. Next month I'm going to order the fuel tank and transfer case skid plates as well.

They are also going to *finally* replace the fog lamp, one was cracked/chipped when I bought the truck.

They are also going to check out my front driver's side rim. The center cap keeps popping out.

I need to take some pictures. My wife loves the truck more than I do. She told me she wanted to trade her car in and I could get a ram and she'd take this dakota. How can I argue with a woman who likes trucks?? She used to be such a ford fan too :)
