Subject: 2-3 shift hesitation 318 99 4x4. IP: Logged
Message: My brother's 99 318 4x4 Dak has a bad hesitation at the 2-3 shift. He had the bands adjusted, but they may have been hacks.
The hesitation allows the engine to spin up, if you're not watching the revs, and hits hard. It seems to take a couple seconds, on throttle or off, so I'm wondering if it's a servo or pump instead of the bands.
Are these user serviceable and can be done with std hand tools. I'm visiting and away from my shop and can't start anythign I can't finish in 1-2 days.
Thanks. MPergiel, Cornelius, OR/Elmhurst, IL

Message: Valve body. Try a bottle of Lube Guard RED ( Advance Auto Parts have it) I have the same truck and had the same problem, Lube Guard worked for me. Flush the system if it hasn't already been done and keep it full, check it in nuetral only, not park. You can also adjust the TV cable(pass. side of throttle body, move away from converter for longer shifts, closer for quicker)

Message: Thanks for the hint. I will check if a flush and fill has been done.
Is a valve body a user replaceable part? That's the unit that is bolted to the labyrinth with an elaborate gasket, right? I suspect it is not, but if it can be done without pulling ht etranny, it's be worth it. It's typically at least $500 to pull it for a diag around here.
