Subject: 318 All the same ?? IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys,
I just bought a '91 D150 2wd 3sp.AT with a 318 in it for $50.. I am thinking about taking the motor out and getting it rebuilt for performance, then putting it in my '99 Dak 4x4 4speed AT, which also has a 318..
I know I'll have to change the intake 'cause the '91 is TBI, but other than that is there anything else that might not fit in the '99, like the bolt pattern for the trans ??

Message: i think the heads are different on that year? it should bolt right up to the trans and work if you have the pcm with it. you can probably go to the junkyard and find a jeep or truck with a 318 that was fuel injected and get the needed parts off of it. should run good when finished!
nice thumbnail pic!

Message: that's a LA 318. Heads are different, mounts are different, etc etc
other words, it wont just bolt up.

So if I understand you right intensedak you're telling me if it isnt a magnum, it is a totally other block..
Well if the mounts don't even fit I guess I'll keep it for another project..

Message: nerther,
the mounts dont fit. The magnum motors in late model dodge trucks use a different style mount than the LA motors... however, the magnum motors still incorporate the older style mounts.
peter,
92 and newer, unless it's related to EGR.. then you got 92-95 for EGR components.

lol.. ok, you got me confused there..
Anyway, if it doesnt fit, it doesnt fit.. I dont want to get in the process of building new mounts and that kind of stuff.. I need the truck for work..
So I'll just get the magnum rebuilt instead and use the other truck while it's being done..
Thanks a lot..

Message: the older LA motors have a casting coming off the block that a bolt goes through it to mount the motor to the motor mounts.
the magnums all have threaded holes in the side of the block for the mounts to bolt directly to the block, however, they still have the LA mounts, so you can put a magnum in a vehicle that had a LA motor, but you cannot just bolt in a LA motor where there was a magnum.

Message: So, let's say I wanted to put a set of long tube headers on my 93 5.2 dak. The ones that fit a 91 5.2 dak won't fit. Because the heads are not the same, right?

Message: Wrong. Isn't this fun? The exhaust manifolds will bolt up. The heads are different, but Mopar was good enough to keep the basic exhaust outlet similar to the LA. Basically, you can use a Magnum block in older pre-Magnum vehicles, but the pre-Magnums (LA's) can't be used in Magnum-equipped vehicles unless you add custom mounts or a crossmember to bolt to the LA "ears".

Message: you just gotta make sure they clear around the magnum's mount. The LA mount is at the very front of the motor, while the magnum's mount is about dead center. Could cause some clearance issues.

Message: And don't get discouraged. One set might not fit, while a different set will. It all depends on the way the tubes are run, and just how big they are. I'm thinking you probably won't have too much trouble with it.

Message: Well, I just got off the phone with Holley and they told me that the frame for a 91 and the frame on the 93 are not the same and those headers won't fit. Is this right? The body is the same so I would think the frame would be. Shoot I might just have to make my own set of headers. I have people telling me around here I can't do that or it won't work. I was told by a hotrod shop that it would cost me well over a grand to make my own headers.I told them then I won't be buying the parts from you. No matter it will be a while before I do anything, still need to get the truck back on the road. Thanks guys, for all the info. and input.

Message: I think you are right daddio. But I took those off long ago and they happen to be in my garage along with the 5.9 I got. I put shorty headers on but I think I want something different. After the cow thing happened I have been looking at ways to make it the way I want it and long tube headers is one route. Thanks for the site.

Message: 1992 and early '93 had larger inside diameter exhausts.
I've read the same thing about the different frames. It seems all the parts suppliers draw that same distinction, but I have yet to read just what, or where the difference is. I wonder if it's not just another "Magnum engine" marketing thing. Looking at my '89, I can see where it'd be kinda tight around the steering shaft, and the mount pads for the V6, but it looks like there's enough room for even some big tube headers. Even mine had rear exit exhaust, though. Ironically, the Magnum exhausts fit perfectly.

Message: Nerther, this info is not totally true on the motor mounts some 90s and 91s LA motors had both mounts, check your block..91 daks, premag 318s[5.2]
had the 3 bolt mounts, these blocks are also in some 90s and 91s rams and vans,so get under your truck and check to see if your motor has the 3 bolt bosses, they will be about mid block,2 bolt near the oil pan rail,1 bolt higher between the other 2 making a triangle pattern
hope this helps clear things up

Message: Just to clear things up- the 318 in the '91 Dakota does have the cast mid-block bosses, just like the '92 magnum mounts. It took a while for me to find a used '91 for sale to look at and verify this. So- check out any '91 318 for those bosses- they may not be on all '91 318's, but they are on the '91 Dak 318's.
