Message: The point is: to mount the V8 in the Dakota (1st year for v8 is 1991, except for the special Shelby v8 modified for '89) required those mid-engine bosses. So it looks like the magnum blocks were pulled ahead 1 year from '92. Of course there is a slight difference between '92 magnum 318 short block and the '91 LA short block- the oiling holes for the LA rocker arm shafts on the '91.

Message: Another example of how Dodge phased in changes, just as they did with roller cams, closed chamber swirl-port heads, and throttle body fuel injection in the 80's.

Message: Besides, I believe the point is that the donor truck is a D150, which will mount the engine in the LA tradition....by the ears. He will need to see if it was a newer Magnum-style block. Since it was a phase-in, the newer style was probably aimed at Dakotas, while the last of the LA's was used in the full-size trucks.

genI i was told that SOME made it in the earlier rams and vans also[maybe as early as 90] thats why i said to check and i never said anything about the 89s which more then likely was casted in 1988

Message: Ok, thanks guys, I figure the best thing to do will be to get my butt in the snow and simply measure for the mounts, unfortunately I cant do that right now as the truck is 650KM (400Miles) away..
But let say I'm a lucky guy and I can get the mounts to fit, would I be able to bolt the LA to the transmission and make it work ??
Also, how do you guys deal with MPI on a modified engine ??

Message: i understand that the tranny will bolt right to the LA block. I recommend you rebuild and build up your '99 magnum 318 and put it right back in (better cam etc). The magnums have better breathing heads, slightly better valve train, and your '99 probably has no EGR (simpler). Plus- i do not think there is much if anything out there to convert LA to MPI (need manifold for injectors). Dodge spent a lot in developing that magnum engine (318 hp went from 175 to 230). You may as well use it. Recommendation- buy the book by Larry Shepard- 'How to rebuild your Mopar Magnum V8' which can help you decide. This book elso explains differences between LA and magnum, and even the Dakota boss mounts at mid-engine. He also wrote 'How to Hotrod your smallblock Mopar V8' which is for the LA versions. I am awaiting his new book: 'How to hotrod Mopar magnum engines'

Message: Engine mounts aside, the next issue would be the crank trigger at the rear, passenger side of the block. If you're gonna run MPI, you have to have a crank trigger. The Magnum blocks have a raised pad where the trigger bolts to. Now, anyone skilled in metal could fab something, or you could go aftermarket and set one up on the front of the engine. Edelbrock now offers an MPI for Mopar smallblock, but you're talking serious cash. To build up to the '99 Magnum, you could swap the top end, meaning Magnum heads/rockers and intake. Add the correct pushrods (hollow) and you should already have oiling lifters, and you'd have a Magnum, more or less, and while the LA cam is milder, the higher ratio rockers of the Magnum would offset this a lot, so your specs would be closer to the stock 5.2 Magnum. The computer has a good bit of room for mods. Think of it this way. You can bolt a supercharger on one with the stock computer and make 30-40% more HP, so as long as your mods aren't more drastic, you're gonna be within the capabilities of the stocker.

Message: Highest HP number I've seen on a 318 belongs to the '58 Fury at 290HP. The engine was referred to as the Dual Fury V-800, and it had dual 4bbl carbs as standard equipment. It was a bigger block than the LA/Magnum variants, but the bore/stroke was the same.
