Subject: My new exhaust! Video IP: Logged
Message: I went to the shop yesterday and changed my mind as to what I wanted to do. WAS going to delete the 3rd cat and go from the precats into a 3" collector and then single through a Magnaflow muffler and out near stock location. Quoted me ~$300 for this.
Shop said I should try this setup they recommended and I really liked it so I just did this. Cut off the stock exhaust behind the 3rd cat and 3" straight piped it. Its got no muffler and a 3.5" polished stainless tip. I'm very happy with the result and I saved $140 from the first quote ($160 total bill).
I have a video of it on streetfire, link at bottom. Sorry for the uglyness of my truck, had some salty weather here in PA yesterday. Tip is mirror polished, but you can't tell in the vid.

Not to get off subject, but where did you get that american ramhead dodge sticker on your back window? That looks awesome, and I'd like to get something like that for mine.

Message: That must really suck to have 3 cats! I have one and am going to put a cutout right after my cat. I have a 50 Series SUV Flowmaster on the stock pipe with a chrome tip in the stock location, but sometimes I want it really loud. Toolfan, I like the video of you driving without a muffler! It sounds mean! Back when I was looking for a truck I was looking at a 2001 4.7 and had planned on straight piping it after the 3rd cat but I found my 318 at a deal too good to pass up with all the accessories on it (Rhino liner, Advance folding Tonneau, flowmaster, it also came with a jet chip I'll be taking off soon when I get a hypertech). Can't wait to get the cutout!

Message: My neighborhood is pretty loud even without me. My neighbor has a 318 Dakota with headers and flowmaster exhaust and a mustang GT, guy across the street has a lifted jeep wrangler 4.0L with loud exaust and big mud tires, diagonal across the street has two integras with fart cans. But I'll be the loudest when I get my cutout after the cat!

(Dual 2.5" exhaust glass packs)
Glass packs are like straight pipes when you get the RPM's up!
I am thinking of throwing dual flows on it to bring the volume down a bit in the cab.
Am currently cutting and welding a bit here and there on the two 40 series Flows I have sitting in my garage so I can re use them.
I may swap them some time this week if I get it done. Should remain loud outside the cab with the large 2 1/2" pipe I ran from the manifolds back.
Let me know how you like the IN CAB sound once you try and take a cruise somewhere :) But maybe it wont be so bad with the single pipe. I've got HUGE pipe up front right off of my exhaust manifolds. They were smaller than 2" off of the manifolds and now it's enlarged to 2.5 right at the manifolds.

jpkomm - Was it you that asked me that in another post? I keep forgetting to stop at the shop I got it at...local vinyl shop. I think they have a website, will try to look when I go home in the morning. Shoot me an email to remind me :) caulk_j@yahoo.com
3 cats doesn't bother me too much, it runs damn good for a 4x4. I may pick up a 3" hi-flow cat and have the same shop do that up for me...later though.
G.D. - Accelerating it resonates and is pretty loud...but I like it. My GF even likes it!!! I couldn't belive it! My dad also likes it, but hasn't ridden in it to much. Now, the guy I car pool with, he thinks its too loud...TOO BAD!!
Yesterday morning was 40º, warm enough to have the windows down a touch. Drove through town and made it bark off some buildings...hehe! I love it!!

Message: My duals have one pipe coming out the right side and one coming out the left. It defenitely barks as it echos off of buildings. They are aimed to the sides, not straight out the back :)
3" chrome tailpipes for the last 20" or so too.

Message: Yes, the third cat is just before the muffler.
Pre cats are just after the manifolds, before the y-pipe. Third is just after the y-pipe, before the stock muffler.

Message: Glass packs probably won't quiet it down a whole lot...and nobody will be able to give you a hassle about inspection. The packs will probably get a little louder with time also as the packing wears out.

Message: well guys since i took off the 3rd cat and now have tubing in its place i will say i noticed a difference in sound and power.
i also would like to run 3" out the back but that would require the tools i dont have and replacing the flowmaster i have on there.
i should have got a sound clip of my auto teacher revving the motor to 5k rpms with the engine cold.

Message: Tool,
Do you still have the stock y-pipe in there? If so that should be the next thing to go. Only thing stock with my exhaust are the manifolds and I don't like cats either ;-)
Later...

Message: My 2003 4.7 Y-Pipe was not as bad as the earlier ones people showed.
Not bad design at all if you ask me.
Maybe that's why my 4.7 in my heavy 4X4 always ran good from the get go???
Of course I now have 2 1/2" right form the pipe off the manifold.
Dual 2 1/2" cats.
Dual glass packs.
Glass packs are almost as loud as straight pipe. Quieter at an idle by a good amount. A good thing.
But on the throttle just as loud.
And if you get the glass packs good and hot then spray water inside them with a hose (I haven't done this myself) it will burn out the packing really quick and make them louder.
I wouldn't want them louder.
I'm working little by little to fix up a couple of used Flowmaster 40 series to try in place of the glass packs. One flowmaster was my old one and one from my bro in laws Ram. We both had flows, then both have glass packs now.
