Does anyone know what size the nut is on the crank pulley - '93 318 - I need to find TDC on each cylinder but cant afford a whole set of big sockets.

You could buy yourself a (strap) pipe wrench. I use one all the time for just such repaires. They work great and they fit everything. Just put it around the pully and give it a turn. Good wrenches start around 40$ and go up from there.
