i almost forgot, when i replace my t-stat do i have to get a new gasket for it or does it seal itself somehow? just planing ahead.

The stock gasket works just fine with no leakage......you could notch the tstat if you like although someguys have skipped that step

Did the install with the Robert Shaw on my '01
4.7 and the gasket worked fine....... no need to notch. Got 15,000 miles on since the T-Stat install and no problemo.. Bill in NY

When you get your new t-stat and compare it with the original there will be a very small notch in the outer round body of the original. Most people notch the new one to match the original. The rubber gasket on the 4.7 liter t-stat will will fit better with the notch. You can use the original rubber gasket and notch the t-stat with a dremmel type tool.
