My 318 magnum has started acting up on me. Usually when you turn the key it always fires right up but lately it will grind over for about 5 seconds before starting. The other day when coming to a stop and dumping the clutch it shut off and would not start. After half an hour i went out and started it right up. After the truck runs and gets warmed up you can shut it off and it will restart right away. I think my IAC is bad but i have been running it this way for about a year with no problems so i think it may be something else. I pulled the codes from turning the key on and off 3 times and only get a 55 code which is nothing. Anyone have any idea where to look next? Thanks for any help.

A friend of mine who has worked on Dodges for 23 years at a dealership told me that the Idle Air Control motor on the back of the throttle body gets dirty over time and needs to be removed and cleaned periodically.

He also said that with ones that are like over 100,000 miles old, he just replaces them.

My 5.2 has been idling a little funny sometimes, I think I might have a look at that. I've got 93k miles on mine so far.

I've never removed one before though; I don't know if there are any tricks or surprises to pulling one out. Anyone care to offer any info?

Mine does the same thing. I have a 1996 Dodge Dakota SLT extended cab with the 318. I have 74k miles on it. It has been hesitant on starting since I got it at 56k miles. It will turn over for about 4 seconds before starting when cold, when it's hot, it fires right up. i'm still figuring out what causes mine.

Well, I removed my Idle Air Controller out of the back of the throttle body and cleaned it. It is just an electric valve and there aren't any tricks to removing it at all. Just be carefull not to drop either of the two torx screws holding it in.

Mine was covered in soot; the soot was a quarter inch thick around it in some places. I just wiped it off with a rag; the truck does seem to idle smoother now that it is clean. Next time I clean it; I'm also going to try to clean the insided of the throttle body where this thing attaches with some Q-Tips or something. Compressed air would probably work good but I'm not sure if there is anything delicate down in there.

I did the same thing yesterday, except I used choke and carb cleaner (2 cans) and blasted the hell out of the inside of the intake manifold to where it was perfectly clean. I also did the same to all the sensors in the throttle body as well as the throttle body. I notice a difference in power. Mine IAC was not very sooty though. BIG thing for a 318 is to keep your PCV valve changed regularly, if not it can make you burn oil as well as pollute your intake manifold like it did mine. Luckfully I got all of mine out.
