Subject: More Spark Plug Questions IP: Logged
Message: I've been reading a lot about the Bosch Platinum +4's for my 01 4.7 QC and read some good and some bad. My question for the guys who don't like them is, if they're that bad, why do you guys still have them in your trucks? They have a slip you can send in if you have your old receipt and get a refund. Also, the people that like them, do you get better performance or better milage or both? And finally, Has anyone tried a set of the denso iridiums? I've heard they are great plugs but I haven't heard anything about them from any dakota owners. Thanks
JEF

you don't need. Electicity is like water, it takes the path of least
resitance. I don't care if it has 3 prongs made of gold or what, the
store displays are not in a cylinder hear under presure. Save the
money buy an autolite.

Message: I don't know about those particular plugs, but I just put in a set of NGK 2262's in my 03 4.7
l. They really smoothed out my idle and I have slightly better MPG's. It had crappy Champion plugs before. Just my .02.

Draco12 maybe your Dak needed new plugs anyway, and any decent plug would have given you those results.

Message: choochoo... No, the Champions looked damn near new when I took them out. My 4.7 had a really rough idle before I changed to NGK's. Runs really smooth now. It's all a matter of opinion when it comes to plugs. I've never had much luck with champions myself so I went a diferent route.
IF your truck runs good with champions,,cool.
Mine runs better on NGK's.

Message: I had those Bosch Platnium +4's in my Jeep Gr Cherokee 5.2L. They never ran right, and I always had problems with them.
I think I either read somewhere in a repair manual, or someone on this board had made mention that you are only supposed to use copper-tipped plugs in the 4.7L engine. Not sure how valid that is though.

Message: Yea, I've heard that too jpkomm, but I read it on here but I specifaclly lokoed for it in the owners manual and saw nothing. I've also heard of people having good and bad luck with the platinum's but I might just give them a try and if they don't work then i'll send them back. Thanks for everyones posts though.

Message: No, don't go with Autolite. Champions are the ones that are actually made for MOPAR's. Autolite are GM etc. I stuck with the Champions and have had no problems. You might also use some good injector cleaner/carb cleaner. Just because the plugs look like new, doesn't mean they are still good. you may have a hairline crack in the porclean etc. Don't go judging the old plugs against the new ones. It's like a 60 yr old running a race against a teenager.

autolites are not GM, Delco is GM. Autolite is the same company as Fram and Prestone - they are an after market company who makes products to conform to automotive manufacturer specs.
I've been running autolite for years. Why? Cause they are cheap, work as good as any other plug I've used and easily available.

Message: I have the Bosch +4 in my truck. Whether they make a difference or not who knows? I tried the autolite 3923's and gapped them wrong so of course I had 2 misfires....I said forget it and bought the +4's because no gapping involved and I don't have to worry about it.
Overall no real differences for me. Still idles perfect and my mpg is around 14mpg overall. I just know with the +4's there will always be a spark when I need it so I have no worries.

Message: Slow4x4dak.... I'm guessing you mean with 4 side electrodes, one or more could foul and the others would still work. Not so. You could have 10 side electrodes and if one fouls or otherwise becomes incapasatated, the plug will not work. Here is some food for thougt for everybody. platnium plugs have very little resistance. For example. baush plugs run 5 or 6 thousand ohms . Because of this, if you have a week coil or spark that is in any way not up to par, the platniums are most likely going to fire. On the other end of resistance comes champion. The ones your truck came with have 75,000 ohms resistance. In a nut shell this is what you truely need in the dakota because of spark knock problems that are so frequant. What this does is hold the spark back till it builds up enough to fire the plug. The advantage is hoter firing plug and not firing quit as soon effectively retarding the spark ever so slightly. Now knowing this I myself use the champion TRUCK PLUGS . These have 85,000 ohms resistance to slow the spark just a tiny bit more effectively allowing a bit hotter spark and again retardng the firing just a tiny bit more .I have no detonation in my 99 5.2L and I'm not saying this will fix everybodies detonation but it sure can't hurt. If you got a bad plenum gasket nothing short of fixing it will help.

Message: Your absolutely correct. Champions are heavely used on mowers and for good reason > There made of softer metal then all other plugs plus they don't fire till the voltage is higher then others as stated in last post by me. This helps keep the small engine from fowling. Your going to also see them in most lawn and gardem machinery and especialy logging equipment including chain saws. These guys need to depend on that plug.

Message: If you was to do some serious reading, you would discover platnium plugs have the least resistance of all the plugs out there far as I ever found anyway. The problem with that is it allowes the plug to fire sooner (arc over) then others and there for a weaker spark. Having worked my own shop for 40 plus years, I discovered if platnium plugs made an engine run better then there was an underlying problem > As one example, The coil being at least some what weak. If you was to discover the spark problem, you would end up with a better running enging with regular plugs. Baush was the leader with platnium. Again, if you do some serious reading, you would discover the lucus ignition system of years past was the reason baush developed the platniun plug. Lucus ignitions was a weak system and came on all german autos and a lot of others (no american cars) in years past. It's really not a big deal. Use what pleases you. That's what makes this country so great.

Message: I have an 04 with low miles, I didn't design the coil setup.why does every make of vehicle have a preferred plug to run? If I was to have a spark problem, and by running double platinum plugs to smooth it out, then i'll keep running them.If i was running one coil then i could see the problem then, along with whatever else it could be,but on a newer machine carrying 8 coils, and for plugs to correct it.i would highly doubt it's weak. I took my girlfriends stratus for plugs to the dealer,it cost her 60 dollars for those plugs/without labor.they were champions too. they probably are in partnership with briggs&stratton.everyone goes cheap to make a $ and the consumer suffers.you want something good, then you got too spend the $$$$$.
