Subject: 5.2 Poor Performance IP: Logged
Message: I drive a 1993 5.2 auto with just under 100,000 miles. Have just done the plenum gasket, new cap and rotor, 3923's, oil etc. After completing this work, I reset the computer, the truck ran awsome. Lot's of power, no pinging, decent gas mileage. Now that 500 miles have gone by, the truck seems sluggish, mileage dropping off. I would assume the cat is OK since truck ran great after PC reset. Could it be the 02 sensor?Had a sensor replaced once about 35,000 miles ago. If so, should I replace only the pre cat sensor? Would you use OEM, or Bosch? Another comment, old plugs looked to be burning lean, quite white in appearance. Any help would be much appreciated, or maybe I will just reset PC all the time? No engine code on dash, engine light came on once just prior to recent work and never stayed on. ???????

Message: do you know how to check for codes? you do it by turning the ignition off, then on, then off, then on, off again, then turn it on and leave on. a series of blinks will blink representing numbers. if nothing blinks, then you dont have any codes. anyhow, your o2 sensor could easily be screwed up. my o2 sensor(only had one cause its a canadian model;) ) was bad and it didnt pop a code. if its not that i would check your iat and iac.

Message: Thanks jayb, I will try that. I too have a Canadian model with 1 - 02 sensor before the cat.
All my exhaust system is still original, but since it runs great when PC is reset, I still feel cat is ok.

Message: One simple way of checking the cat is to tap on the bottom of it and listen for anything rattling around inside. That's how I found my bad cat on my 93 Dakota with the 5.2.
Most auto parts places; Auto Zone in particular, will plug the scan tool into your car and check for saved codes for free.
Good luck.

Message: All OBDI Daks had 1 O2 sensor. In 96 when OBDII was introduced, you started seeing multiple O2 sensors and cats. My 92 only has the single O2, which was pretty much the norm for most vehicles in the early 90s.
If you are going to replace the O2, get one from NGK. Sparkplugs.com sells them. The Bosch ones are junk, and will fail much earlier than the NGK, which was the original OEM for Dodge.

Message: Sneezer, thanks. I replaced the 02 sensor, reset the pc. Time will tell if this mod helped. I did check for codes, what I saw was the check engine light flash 3 times, then a pause, then flash 10 times. Anyone know what this means?

Message: I checked the codes and came up with a code 12 - battery or computer disconnected recently- no problem. Next code was Injector circuit not switching right.
Anyone had this problem on a 1993? Vehicle still getting poor pileage, I think it should have more balls.
Any insight much appreciated.

Message: Autozone sells the code readers for prices from 75$ to 150$ the lowest price one just reads code but it will help you when you have porblems like this. They also erase codes that make the engine lite come on. Buy the reader they also come with a CD for the computor so you can look up what codes mean. As for your problem sound like you have a cloged injector--- To check this out run the motor and one by one unplug each injector one at a time to see if the motor runs the same. If you unplug an injector and the motor doesn't drop it's idle speed or it doesn't seem to run different than that's the bad one. Don't forget to plug in the injector after you unplug it before you check thr next one
