Message: Evap Emission Leak
First bet, replace your gas cap. Dakotas are known to have leaky gas caps. Get an aftermarket one, not a replacement from the dealer. Worked for me.
Combination city/highway with my '01 V-8 4.7 Club Cab gets around 18.5 - 19.5.

Message: jim,
don't forget to reset your computer, i.e., disconnecting the negative battery cable for a few minutes once you replace the gas cap.
If by chance the code does come back on after driving for a bit, might want to check the O2 sensors. Autozone will do the computer check for free.
The P0445 code can do both, gas cap and sensor. If the code were to be P0442, I would say definitely just the gas cap from my experience.

Message: Just ran my Dak through emissions here in Wisconsin and had to get a new gas cap. It was all rusty looking on the under side. It didn't throw a code, just wouldn't pass the E-stations hook-up leak test. It WASN'T covered under the emissions warranty by the dealer. Asked like hell why not and they said because it's a wear item. ??? Had to get one 6 months after I got the truck also because it threw a code, but that was covered because it was so new. New one only cost me about $10 and they said it was the 5th one that week they sold. It was only Wednesday when I went in there. :)

Message: 1999 5.2, 4x4, 5 speed with 3.55 gears and the 31x10.50R15 tires. I'm getting fairly good gas mileage...
I got the truck with 70k miles in October of 2004. It was still stock with a blown plenum gasket. I was getting in the mid 14's in the truck at that time.
I put on a 40 series flowmaster muffler in place of the stock muffler and that got my mileage up to an average of like 15.2 mpg. A little later, I installed an Air Raid air intake, I didn't see any MPG increase with this thing. It was a rip off at 180 dollars. I wish I had returned it.
Still averaging 15.2mpg in my daily driving, I got a 9" round air cleaner and a 9 inch by 2 7/8 inch K&N air cleaner element and installed that on the truck in place of the stupid Piece of junk Air Raid intake. I also installed an S screw in place of the regular air cleaner hold down. The air cleaner and S-Screw brought my gas mileage up one full mile per gallon to 16.2 miles per gallon.
In December of 2005; I was getting tired of all of the pinging and oil burning and so I ordered a Hughes engines Stage One beer barrel intake manifold.
I wasn't able to get it installed until early in January. Something odd happened before I got the intake manifold installed though. I filled up with gas the day before I had the intake manifold installed, I only got 14.7mpg with that tank. I've only been able to surmise that the gas stations down here in Texas switched over to winter gas at that time.
I got the new modified intake manifold installed and my first tank of gas after the install was only around 15.7 miles per gallon. I slowed my driving down considerably after this to help save some money.
Half of my daily driving is on the freeway and I have been keeping the speed down to a maximum of 60 miles per hour. As such, I've now been averaging 16.8 miles per gallon. Going slower doesn't bother me since I am never in a hurry to get somewhere.
These gas mileage numbers are not done via the overhead computer; I check the gas mileage using a calculator and write it down with every fillup.
