Message: Wow. I can NEVER complain about my mileage it seems.
I get an average of 12MPG or so city. Driving full throttle frequently. I drive a company vehicle so when I DO drive my Dak I drive it fast, take off fast, etc.
If I drove it to work on my own gas driving nice i bet I'd get 14-15 MPG. And I have the heaviest Dak model!
Towing 7,000 Lbs I get 8 to 9 MPG. Can't believe some of you get 11 just driving around normal. WTF? Something is wrong if you're actually driving it nice.

Message: Yeah, you really have to wonder; especially when they start talking about miles per tank (which will mean different things to different people) instead of mpg. I have to tow 5000 lbs to drop to 11mpg.

It does look like winter gas would decrease gas mileage. If this guy at the following site knows what he is talking about...

Message: I own a 98 5.2L reg. cab automatic with 110,000 miles on it. I believe that the catalytic converter is original. After that I have a y-pipe leading into 2.25" dual exhaust and tips. How badly can this reduce my horsepower and can it effect my gas mileage with the stock catalytic?

Message: Luke,
Despite being so old, as long as your Catalytic converter isn't bad, you should be fine.
You could always replace your cat with a high flow unit though.
www.randomtechnology.com is very well known for making high flow cats. I'll be going with one of there three inch units when I do redo my exhaust.

Message: thanks ewraven. I researched a little more after I posted. I didn't know if you knew anything that i wouldn't be able to find. I have only had the truck for 15,000 miles, so I can't say much about noticing "power loss" or "decreasing MPG". Thanks for the reply!

Message: Your welcome.
Back to your original question, the 2.25 inch duals after the cat are pretty good for performance and gas mileage. Are they just straight pipes or do they have mufflers on them somewhere? Your truck must be pretty loud if it doesn't have any mufflers.
You would definately be looking at a gas mileage improvement with a high flow cat.
At one time, I owned a 1993 Dakota with the Magnum 5.2. For the 1993 and 1994(IIRC)? models, they came from the factory with three inch piping from the Y-pipe through a three inch catalytic converter and to the muffler where it was reduced to around 2.5 inches after the muffler. The Magnum 5.2 liter V8 didn't hardly change at all from the 1992 model year to the last year of that engine in 1999. In mine with a two chamber flowmaster muffler that had two 2.25 inch pipes coming out of it and a simple open air cleaner element, I was getting 17 mpg in town and 21 mpg on the highway. Which was around around three more miles per gallon than I was getting in that thing stock! The exhuast was really corked up on those things after the muffler.
What kind of MPG are you getting right now in your truck?
I've got a 1999 5.2 Dakota with the 5 speed that I've been modding. I've been able to get my gas mileage up from mid 14's mpg in town when it was stock up to just under 17 miles per gallon in town which isn't bad for the winter 'crap' gas we are getting right now.
I replaced the muffler with a 40 series flowmaster, I did the air cleaner mod and installed an s-screw in place of the factory air cleaner hold down and I've installed a ported and filled intake manifold.
I've explained the air cleaner mod in further detail on page two of my cardomain page...
www.cardomain.com/ride/317659
I'm still not done with the exhaust, the flowmaster muffler was just meant as a temporary thing until I can afford to put on headers and redo the whole exhaust at one time. If I was to do the muffler again though; I'd go with a Magnaflow straight through muffler as they are really a better flowing muffler than the chambered Flowmaster stuff.

After my exhaust manifold is the catalytic. No headers, and no mufflers. The truck actually isn't all that loud. With the tips, I get a very low rumble, and it never really "crackles" like headers would.
I'm getting like 12MPG right now. I'm also a student, so my drive to and from school, work, and church is no more than like 8 miles at a time.
Insult to injury, is living in Michigan off the lakeshore, snowy and often cold winters.
As for "aftermarket", I have the exhaust, better air cleaner kit, 6.5" K&N (not cold air), BF Goodrich All-Terrains, and a sound-system to help drown out the exhaust.
I figure, to get headers, I would also like true dual, so that includes piping, cat, two mufflers, and tips/turndowns. Thats not in my current budget.lol. I like the sound as it is. Enough to wake the family, and neighbor.

Message: I've got a 200R/T R.C. The only thing that hurts my MPG is my 2400 stall converter(around town). It's an hour and a half drive to the dragstrip. My truck runs low 14's depending on the air quality 14.17-14.23 depending. i filled it up on the way home, and refilled it at home. I ended up at 24.3 mpg. So how you get 11????

Message: Yeah it's a little more fun now than it used to be. If I had the money I'd balance and blueprint the engine, also CNC the chambers to a better profile, and match up a set of pistons. that would make it that much more efficient. But fact of the matter is I wasn't really trying for efficiency,I took 6 years to sort out what I knew would work best for what I could afford at the time. realize not only does an engine produce power, it also takes power to run itself. The reason intake and exhaust mods work so well is because an engine has to suck air in, and push it out. By reducing losses there, that same amount of energy(fuel)is then transferred to the crankshaft. Better spark control helps as would(if i could afford a stand-alone system)custom fuel curves. Optimizing and enhancing what you already have is where I started, it wasn't to get better milage (that was just a side effect)I just wanted to beat up on a few 5.0s

Message: Riv, that's awesome that you are getting that great of gas mileage with "just" those mods.
I was wondering about those 1.7 rockers, one guy told me that when he put those on his R/T, they decreased his MPG significantly. What difference in gas mileage did you see with those?

Message: That was with the 1.7 RR,s, maybe I just got a good one. Those were not in the name of milage, they were for performance. I had a 99 R/T R.C. bone stock it ran a best of 15.08, and from detroit to norwalk Ohio (Actually going home from Norwalk to Detroit) it got 22mpg. Mind that one was well worn in.
