Subject: 2001 CC Dak 3.9L to 5.2L IP: Logged
Message: I know this subject has been gone over and over again but its driving me nutz trying to find everything all over the place. Anyways I have a 2001 Dakota CC 5-speed 4wd with the 3.9L engine and 3.55 gears on 265/70R16. I bought the 3.9 thinking I would get better gas milage but from what I have read the 5.2s get about what I get in some cases, and my engine struggles alot.
So what I am asking is what are you guys getting gas milage wise on the same setup I have...I have some connections at some local junk yards so I can prolly convert with very little cost. Also for the transmission, I have heard that the V6 tranny is not built like the V8 ones. I dont know if it makes a difference but on the window sticker it said HD 5-speed tranny. Is that just nothing or will it be able to handle the load? Same goes with the rest of the drive train.
Thank you all for any input you guys can give me. Love the truck but the 3.9 kinda sucks.

Message: 2000 up the only v8's available would be the 4.7 and the 5.9. your best bet is going with a 4.7. the 4.7 is available with the NV3500HD, the 5.9 was not, which should be what you have. someone correct me if i'm wrong. find a donor truck with a 4.7 and PCM wire in the 2 extra injectors. engine mounts, accessory brackets are probably different too. it would definitely be a project.

Message: So the 4.7 is the best option then. With the brackets out of the donor truck it should mount in then? And forgive me for my ingnorance but I'm not sure what NV3500HD is. What about the drive train? Right now I'm just looking for the engine and all the nessary hardware...In all reality this project wont happen for a little while. My plan is to give the engine a complete tear down and spec everything. Everyone will say just go buy a V8 but I love doing this kind of stuff. If its gonna be overkill tho where nothing will mate up I might have to figure out a different option, but until I find that to be true I'm going to pursue it. Thanks for the info
Does anyone have any gas milage reports on a 4.7 5-speed CC with 3.55 gears?

Message: NV3500HD is the 5sp manual DC used from '00-'04(i think) behind the 3.9 & 4.7. a donor truck with a 4.7 & 5spd is probably what you need.
depending what your after, there are stroker kits for the 3.9. Larry of J & J has one and i think he's pushing about 300 rwhp. not bad for a 6'er.

Message: I remember reading on Huges Engines that the cost to stroke one of those engines is about $100 per cubic inch is what it turns out to be (unless the price has dropped some). Im just collection information right now, like i said earlier this is not gonna happen right now. Just a little further down the road. Basically I just want my truck to be a little more usable.
So did they use the exact same trannys in both of those trucks or is there a lighter duty one in the 3.9?
Thanks daddio you have been more then helpful.

Message: A 4.7 will be harder to swap because the 3.9 uses different engine mounts. The 5.2/5.9 use the same engine mounts as the 3.9

Message: Your tranny is the same one that went behind the 318 from '94 and up. It will handle it fine or a mild 5.9. Either one will bolt right to your tranny and in terms of fit and wiring, will by far be the easiest swap.

Message: So the 318 is the way to go like I planned? I can find a 318 alot easier then a 4.7 also. I have the guys at my local junk yard keepin an eye out for me. I'm just gonna get everything I need then go thru the engine with a fine tooth comb. I don't plan on swapping for a bit so when I do swap im gonna put a new clutch in it also just so i dont have to do it down the road.
Will the exhaust mount up to the pre-exsisting cat setup, and will it flow enough? I have the a cat back system setup with duals on it. Plans are to have true duals if I get the 8 banger mounted up in there, but for the time being will it mount up and run alright with the O.E.?
Thanks for all the info, I'm really looking forward to this project in the future.
