2002 4.7 45RFE

A friend of mine used to have a diesel ram with an auto behind it and he did something that I'm interested in doing...

He wired a switch into the TC to allow him to lock the converter when he felt neccesary instead of the transmission deciding when to lockup.

Does anyone know if the TCM will allow this to happen and more importantly, where could I put a switch to accomplish this?

I know you'll ask, so I'll tell you why I want to do this. I've driven and ridden in trucks with 5-45RFE's and I just wish that my 45RFE would hold the TC lockup in top gear like the 5-45's do. Mine just loves to unlock the TC at light throttle which really hurts my fuel milage. I get about 1/2mpg better than my co-worker's 04 QC AWD Hemi...that drives me NUTS! Aside from that reason, I just can't stand to leave my truck alone. I'm always wanting to do something new with it...

Thanks much!!

sounds like a cool mod. i can tell you until you do the mod to prevent unlocking, don't take your foot off then suddenly put even a little gas on. that's a good way to unlock your converter for sure. sometimes i do that when i want it to unlock to pass someone or for playing around

You can unlock it by just touching the brakes also...just enough to light the brake lights.

Anyone out there know?

yes it can be done, theres a valve in the valve body in the trans that controls the fluid for the lock-up,its electric so putting a switch in lets you control when the lock-up comes on,

older dodges had one wire, not sure on newer ones, get a wiring diagram for your yr truck trans
find the wire or wires cut/slice put a switch in,

you should remember to turn the lock-up off when starting out from a dead start,i would,nt think this can be good on the convertor lock-up clutch,[just my thought not fact]

I wonder if that would be in my Haynes manual...never thought to look.

I only plan to use it while at speed cruising along so that it will STAY locked up.

Thanks, but that isn't going to make it holdthe lockup. The TCM still controls when it unlocks.

I have been looking for somewhere to order one of those though...won't install for a while since I just had my tranny flushed last week.
