Subject: Question about 318 IP: Logged
Message: I am looking at buying a Magnum 318 engine, and thinking about putting it into my 91 dakota which currently has a 3.9L in it. I have been told that i can take a tbi intake off of a 88-91 318 and drill and tap the heads to make it fit on the Mag, so that i can avoid wiring issues.
Will a throttle body lower the hps at all? Or will it be the same as putting a premag in? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Message: A couple things. Yes, the power will be lower. The pre-Magnum intake comes in 2 sizes. The small port is 318, big port is 360. If you go with the 318 intake, you will have a port mismatch, as well as the pre-Magnum 318 computer, which has very limited headroom for higher HP. Basically, it'll run, but why bother? If you can get a 360 TBI setup, you'd be much better off since the ports will match the Magnum head ports in size, and the larger TBI and computer will have enough headroom to adequately feed the hotter cam specs of the Magnum. Usually, unless emissions requirements are an issue, the TBI is ditched for a carb and conventional ignition system. Splice a wire and you're good to go.
