Subject: Swapping Drums To Rotors? IP: Logged
Message: I was thinkin about replacing my rear drums with rotors. But dont know much about that process. Is there a kit or something? I want to replace them with a Slotter rotor, titanium is a preferance, as well as being Raybestos (sp). If anyone know about this process, id appreciate it. Thank you

Message: Stainless Steel Brake Corp, or something like that makes a kit for the dakotas. Check on the sporttruck.com site for how-to's or look in Truckin or Sport Truck for their ad.

Message: The only thing you do by getting 4-wheel-disc is loosing your ability to stop on wet roads, the drums are ABS. The ABS keeps you from sliding when you slam on the brakes on a slick road.

Message: I think the rear ABS sensor is in the rear diff, it looks at the ring gear if it completely stops, ABS is applied. So I don't care what ya have stopping it the fluid (or pedal) is still going to surge.
Please correct me if I'm wrong though

Message: The disks are made to lock, that's why you're front wheels lock when you slamm on the brakes, the back one's don't. That keeps you from sliding.

Message: For an example watch the new Dodge Ram commercials, when going into truckville he slams on the brake and the entire trucks slides.
The new Ram has 4-wheel-disc.

Message: i could have gotten 4 wheel abs from the dealer fo $500... and that dosent include front drums.
are you saying ALL cars with disks do not have abs? the ONLY (newer) car i can think of that you can not get abs with is a viper. but i thing for 2002 you can

Message: If you install the rear discs yes the antilock will work. That is correct the sensor is on the ring gear in the rear end. Most of our trucks are just rear wheel antilock although 4 wheel antilock is available. You are correct day to day driving you will not notice a difference. For high performance with repeated stops and high speed stops the discs are less prone to fading. Rear wheel discs have been discussed on this site before look up rear wheel discs.

upgrading your front discs to a larger diameter

Unless your racing 4 wheel disc shouldnt be a

Message: Your right teamfast larger discs and multi piston calipers would be a better option, but no one makes them! At $650 upgrading to rear discs is a great modification. Also add slotted rotors and top grade brake pads at the same time and you won't be disapointed. This is the best brake system you can put on our trucks at this time. If someone comes out with a larger front rotor and multi piston calipers it will be far more expensive than $650. As I have said before rear discs are an improvement even at 30% of total braking for high performance use.

Message: speedtweaks does sell the bigger breaks for the dakotas... i think you have to run at least a 17" rim, and the things are like $3500 bucks!! NO THANK YOU!
i have also heard from people who have put the rear break kit on, that they are not worth the money.
ONE QUESTION THOUGH- how much do they weigh? if they drop the pounds, they might make you accelorate quicker... remember every 10lbs of unsprong weight = 100 lbs of sprong weight

Message: Justin_NTFS - do really believe everything you see on commericals/TV.
Like bjlindsey said, I got the all wheel ABS option too - and them shinny things up front are discs.
Most trucks have rear wheel ABS standard because with nothing in the bed (or in tow) your truck is a front heavy beast. Even my '94 Ranger Splash had rear ABS! Once my boat is hooked up it's possible that the fronts might be forced into lock, thus I opted for 4 wheel ABS. I went sliding thru an intersection once in Blazer with a boat behind us... and it was no fun at all.
