Subject: 4.7 Tachs? IP: Logged
Message: Hey, while we are checking out the speed-limiter question, I have another one. How high do the numbers on your tach go up to? Mine with the manual trans - only goes to 6000 rpm. That's also where the stock rev-limiter was set at. My buddy has an automatic and his tach goes to 7000 rpm. His rev-limiter was also at 6000 rpm. They were purchased within a month of each other and are both '00 models. So I guess the question is:
Which year truck?
Which transmission?
Which tach?
Rev-limiter RPM?

BTW, after the PCM flash, I had it on the dyno and told the guy "run it up to 6K", so he did, BUT when it got to 6000 it sounded BAD, breaking up, rough... scared me ;) haa haa, if thats possible... not sure what it'll sound like now with the 72mm TB @ 6000. hope to find out soon. The local speedshop has been at SEMA all week ;(

Mine was built April 2000, 4.7 5-spd, and it has the 6000 tach. I don't want to find the rev limiter if it's already scared Matt "Screw Fear" Barrett. HeeHee. The top end limiter on my 3.55 eqipped 2wd Sport is 117 (I'm sure about that one;)
I think the 01's have the 7000 tach, but there ain't now way they got a 7000 cut-off. That would be insane. Has anyone seen the 02's? Went to the dealer last nite and saw a Dakota SXT?? All the 02 Sports have fender flares, and now they have two-tone interiors!! And they have that cool-ass dark pewter color as part of the two-tone body package. Like pewter fender flares and rocker panels with a red upper body. Coooool.

Message: Yea, those SXT's look cool. Finally a factory fender flare option!!!
I agree, 7000 would be a stretch, it'd probably survive it, but bsically alot of noise and no power at that point. I'd say 5500 to 6000 is the limit for decent power, UNLESS you had some Heavy, Heavy mods, Like maybe Duner... hee hee

Message: We put my PCM into my buddy's 4.7. Since his tach goes to 7000 rpm, we were able to see where the rev-limiter actually is on the PCM. 6700 rpm! You also wouldn't believe how hard a 4.7 automatic will shift if you have the PCM from a 5-speed! It even chirps the tires on the 2-3 shift. I haven't had mine much past 5000 rpm in 5th gear yet. That's dead on 150 mph and it was still pulling very hard. My passenger was getting kind of nervous, so I shut it down. I think it should pull to about 165 or so (5500 rpm) if not a little better. I'll let you guys know if I ever run it up there. I did detect some driveline or tire vibrations at that speed, so I'll want to be somewhat cautious. (who me?) hehehe
I bought another stock PCM to run with my turbo set-up. The timing was way too aggressive with the other one. I had forgotten all about rev and speed limiters. Holy Crap! It's amazing how violent they hit when you're not expecting them. The stock PCM allowed me to run "normal" premium unleaded, still make 7 lbs of boost and tow my trailer. It's not as fast with it in the "towing" mode, but it still moves pretty good. I'm going to have to get this PCM done also to remove the limiters. A guy could get hurt with those in place!

Rev limiter: unknown (at least 6000)
Speed limiter: unknown (at least 110MPH)
A ricer at work keeps telling me "if it doesn't have a red mark you can take it as high as the tach goes". I'm not the kind of guy who believes that. 6000RPM is a safe engine speed, but you should've shifted by then. Internally it could probably take 7000 w/o damage, but the power loss would be immense over 6000 or so w/ stock components. Maybe Dodge would upgrade them in the HO and make a 7000RPM 4.7 :)
