This summer I was hoping to build my 318 to make good streetable horsepower and tourque(good tourque below 3000 rpm, if possible)I would like to maintain half way good gas milage( at least 9-10 mpg, again, if possible) Cash is fairly so can't be too expensive. I plan to a little towing mostly toting my friends suzuky samurai to far away destinations(because or it's inabiltiy to maintain highway speeds for any long period of time if he can get there at all) I also would like to do lots of off roading too. it weighs about 2000-2500lbs. with out trailer 3000-3500 lbs with trailer, I think. I would also like to keep this motor boost free. I am hoping to make 260-300hp.(if possible) and 320-340 ft.lb.of tq.all at the rear wheels(again if possible)I have no idea if my demands are even possible so bring me back to reality if they aren't.

I was thinking high effeciency tourque converter, KRC 206 cam, M-1 intake, exhaust, heads if needed(most likely will be),electric fan(if it's be submerged in water and stil work), holley 14 inch by 3 inch tall element powershot air cleaner, and to top it all off a 52mm F&B throttle body(I know what your thinking "can't do this sh!t on a budget")
So if you have this combo or have any idea of what kind of power this would make and what kind of gas milage it gets pleas tell me.

Always in search of more power.

i think what your asking is obtainable. if you get the manifold than have the stock 318 heads ported or port them yourself. my friend just went with the edelbrock 2.02 heads and you have to get roller rockers and new value covers just to run them, that cost alot of money. i think roller rockers should be one of the things you should look into too. the gas mileage is gonna suck but you will get good power out of it.

Moddify your Beer barrel, you will not have any usable lowend torque with an M1 for your application.

Use an F&B 50 mm, same as above, 52m is too big for a 318.

Go with a single 3" exhaust, and try to get a set of MOPAR headers(they are getting hard to find)

A 2400 stall convertor will get you into the powerband much faster

KRC 206X cam makes great low end TQ for you, also pulls in the top.

Lastly have your stock heads rebuild, with 1.97 intake valves, have them ported and you will be laughing.

This can be done on a tight budget.

like I said this does have to get good gas milage in a year I will be a poor college student and would like to get 10-12 miles to the gallon I'm not quite sure this is atainable but I have to try. I'm spacifically talking about that 2400 stall tq. converter. I'm already riding at 2,000rpm up the hill out of my school. I don't know what a higher stall tq. converter does to my gas milage so I would like to know.

a Convertor will make zero difference in mileage, because ours are locking, it is a direct drive.

that cam will start making TQ right away, and pull past 4500. I have a dyno sheet somewhere around here. I'll see if I can find it

Modifiing a beer barrel consists of cutting down the runners and removing the center divider. also smoothing the injector ports and possibly some filling.

I am suprised no one has said it yet. You should get new gears. You have mentioned three things that beg for gears. Low end, towing, offroading. Go get yourself a set of 4.10's.

Janesy is right about the M1. Its a top end intake. Stick with the stock one. Pull it off, and clean up the casting yourself. It takes some time, but its worth it. Don't shorten the runners, just make them all the same.

A performance converter will make a difference in mileage. Janesy is right about being lockup, but thats only at highway speeds. Your gains will be in stop and go driving. An unlocked t.c. is a huge draw on power (and gas). A high efficiency one will increase mileage.

good point about the runners, they are very sencitive to what they are cut to, I have heard , but not done, that you can remover a bit without hurting TQ. that would be something to look into. Because all the low end power is nice but, sometimes you do need to spin it up there, and the BEER barrel basically stops working at 4k. With a cam ground as tight as the 206X, you could definatly open it up and not loose any low end, I made 305RWTQ with an M1

yes you made 305rwtq but at what rpm. most days I don't even go past 2500rpm if that. so if i could make more tourque at 2000 than I am making now I would be pretty happy. and one more thing I would like to keep the stock computer so as to not have to run 93, besides 93 octane in omaha is hard to come by, very hard. most we have readily available is 92. but it's expensive so I would prefer to still run the 89 ethanol stuff(cheapest)they don't have superchips for my 1993 only mopar pcm.

1 more thing if I put 4.10s or 3.92s in what will that put my rpm at if i'm going 75-80mph because this thing will be doing a lot of highway traveling in the future.

235/75R15 (28.9") and the 3.55's = 2,285 RPM
235/75R15 (28.9") and the 3.92's = 2,520 RPM
265/70R16 (30.6") and the 3.55's = 2,150 RPM
265/70R16 (30.6") and the 3.92's = 2,375 RPM
265/70R16 (30.6") and the 4.10's = 2,485 RPM

If you have true 31's, the RPM's will be 30 rpm's less.

I currently have the 3.55's and 30.6" tires and am looking to switch to 4.10. I spend most of my highway travel at 70-75, which puts me at 2200-2300.

You will hear varying opinions on how they will effect your mileage. Most people with the 31's said they inclease mileage in the city, and highway remains the same.

Keep in mind, this is a 318. You can run the thing for years at 2500 rpm's and never have a problem. Its a great engine.

I know it's a great engine mine has 194,000 miles on it it doesn't burn a drop of oil and it runs awsome no machanical problems what so ever. and it still runs like a champ. but i used the gear calculator on 4wheelparts.com and it said I would be running like 3500rpm. that no engine can take for 500 miles.

That 3500 is with the O/D off. we have a .69 OD
3500*0.69 = 2415.

Little engines run that 3500 all the time on the highway. But thats a totally different setup.
