Subject: Is it a limited slip or ... ? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 95 dakota club cab 4x4 5.2. I always thought it seemed to get around in the mud, snow, and muck a lot better then it should have with the puny 225/75r-15 tires the previous owner had left on there for me.
When I had it up in the air I noticed that when I moved one tire, the other moved the same direction, as would indicated a "posi"
My question, being somewhat new to Daks, is how good are these factory diffs?
While we're at it... what axles are under this thing? Wondering what's available for gears and lockers and such but I don't know what the axle designations these are, therefore making it hard to shop.

Message: My 93 5.2 Dakota had the 8.25 inch rear axle with the sure grip. Your truck is more than likely equipped with the 8.25 inch rear axle too. My 1999 that I have now has the 9.25 inch rear axle.
You might be able to tell what axle you have by looking in the glove box for a sticker and there may also be a tag or sticker on the axle. On my truck that sticker on the axle is worn off, it is in the glove box too however.
The only drawback I know of to the Dodge "sure grip" limited slip differential is that it is a clutch type unit. If you do a lot of burn outs and that sort of thing, then you'll wear the clutches in it down pretty quickly.
Just remember if you ever change the rear end gear oil, don't forget to add in the friction modifier.
